    Default Great Grandad's razor

I recently acquired my Great Granddaddy's razor.

It has a black handle with the work QUEEN on it.

The blade is stamped with Barber's Queen Made in Germany on one side, the other side has Sears and Roebuck 1865.

If you had this would you sharpen it and use it or would you treasure it as a family heirloom?

Welcome to SRP ! You are one of the few lucky enough to have their ancestor's razor. What a cool thing to have and to use. If you were to post a photo of each side of the razor open we could better advise you as to whether it is in good enough condition to justify sending it out to be honed.

In the meanwhile here is some of what is recommended for new guys to read and here are some videos to help you along as you progress.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'm in a similar situation where I was "gifted" by my mother this Christmas, my Great Great Grandfather's Wade & Butcher. It was sent this morning to Kenrup in San Antonio, Texas for a restoration and honing. I totally intend on using it on a regular basis after I receive it back from Ken. I am very sentimental about it since he was a Liverpudlian/ Scouser and apparently this was his favorite razor of all he ever owned. History was my favorite subject in school and the fact that I will be using a historical family item over 100 years later brings great joy to me. If you feel in a similar way, I encourage you to consider something similar as far as restoration and use.

    Mike,

    That is one sweet heirloom

You're going to love it when it gets cleaned up! Is that ivory? It looks like it, and it looks good, too

Looks a lot like the bone scales on my Tonsorial Gem.

OP, take that razor, get it cleaned and restored by a pro here, and shave! Straights are one of those rare combinations of beautiful craftsmanship and practicality that is missing from the modern world.

welcome to srp one of the great things about a straight razor is you can do both restore it, get it honed, shave with it then pass it on as a heirloom
