Thread: History of Wade & butcher Sheffield England

I am from Canada and I have a Wade & Butcher bowie knife and was wondering if i could find some information about it. I was wondering when it could have been bought and brang to canada...was it the first people in my family to come to canada in the 1800's or was it my great uncle who bought it when he was in england for the first world war?or could it have been my uncle who fought in ww2?

On the knife left side it has markings of a Encircled "B" with an arrow and a maltess cross

It also has Wade & butcher sheffield England On it

W&B had a brisk international trade in razors from at least the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th. It could very likely have been purchased here in Canada.

W. & S. Butcher's cutlery business was established in 1725, according to their advertisements. However, William was born in 1791 and Samuel in 1797. Export to North America seems to have expanded greatly in the 1830s, when their New York agent was Robert Wade. The company continued to make cutlery until 1959.
The style of the knife appears to be typical of later production, not the peak of the Bowie craze. Also, the sheath is riveted. My best guess as to age would be 1900 - 1940.
