Back in my law enforcement days, I answered a call of a knife fight at a beer joint that involved a str8. One guy had some pretty nasty defense wounds on his arms but nothing life threatening. Apparently, the full hollow ground str8 chipped big time in two places upon hitting bone, rendering it useless. A good K-Bar or some other fighting knife would have been much more effective.
I would not dream of trying to injure anyone with a straight since I have better tools for that, Finnish hunting knifes are usually more than enough, but straights conceal better and would probably have such a scare effect that here where I live anyone not dead set on trying to kill me would probably step down if I pulled out one in defense. :)

Having been in the Army during the Vietnam business and having trained and qualified on several serious weapons, my choice of tool for nastiness would be an M-60 machine gun. I don't know if it is used any more, but against soft targets it was utterly devastating. Any target I acquired out to 1000 meters, I owned. Were there unanswered questions within 100 meters, I'd refer them to my 1911-A1. Later, when I had the choice of carrying it or an M-16; I chose the .45. With any sort of anticipation or preparation, I'd never think of bringing a knife to a gun fight. If it were a razor fight, I'd still bring my .45.Quote:

i have not been in a knife fight. I have had knife fight instruction. I have had knives pulled on me three times that I remember, once my tongue got me out of it, two times they were slow and I was fast. beyond that these are just my opinions.
I think a razor is scary, because of the type of cuts it makes, I think that in a pinch you could use it if you were coming up from behind, or in situations where you really needed an answer. but in a fight it has way too many limitations and trying to use it could probably interfere with you being able to disarm, get past or otherwise fight bare handed.
as far as knives go. always a forehand grip, I'm sure there is a use for a reverse grip, but it is limiting in your slashes and stabs. a handguard is always great, keep you from sliding up and cutting yourself in a stab. a double edge probably good for some people, gives more options. personally i think a good Kabar would be awesome. I like a little more belly in a knife given an option. I have a camp knife that has an antler handle that fits in my hand like part of my body, with about a 6" blade, good belly on it, serrations on the back where I put my thumb, I have a collection of knives and for a fixed blade that one is probably tied for first if I had to pick.
folding knives the only thing I would feel 100% safe with is a butterfly. it's the only thing that you can guarantee won't close on your hand. I've carried lots of folders though, and right now have a benchmade line lock folder in my back pocket. but given a choice....
and that's what it all comes down to, the ideal weapon of course is not what you're going to have, you make do with what you've got. a knife is better than bare hands (if you know how to use it), a club is better still, guns of course help loads. and a pistol is a means to get to a rifle etc.
I have lots of guns and given a choice I'd take my 4000lb SUV :D
for intimidation though, straights, bludgeons, there's certain things people are just scared of. I've always said that if I lived in the days of duals and the challenged choosing their weapon I'd always choose a bludgeon. i figure the prospect alone woudl keep most guys from challenging you.

Why use a razor as a weapon when you could use a weapon as a weapon?
The only scenario in which I could see it happening is if I were attacked whilst shaving. Highly unlikely, even given the tough-nut woodlice and hard-as-nails house spiders which inhabit my bathroom!

Initally when the double edge first was made available to the gneral public the makers could not sell any of them. Men figured that they had this razor that had been doing hte job great since the dawn of time and there was no need to change anything. Clearly they had to do something, their product was not nearly as good as what their customers had in their hands and they could not sell anything. So even then the marketing strategists told the makers if you have a product that costs more and gives less in excahnge then you have to go on the offensive to be able to sell your product. They called into question the safety of the straight razor (in modern times this is reffered to as spin (lieing to the public)) and that marketing campaign has stuck with us since then to the modern age.
If you're in a back alley, and some dude pulls out a straight to threaten you.
Simply pull out your styptic pencil! You'll be invincible to any nicks and cuts, and can then proceed to kick his azz!
