Thanked: 41Please help ID this razor, 7 pics
I found this str8 at an antique shop. The price was very reasonable, I think. I purchased this to practice on my restoration of str8s. There are no markings to ID the Manufacturer. The dealer thought that maybe it was a hybrid, or put together with various parts. His decision was mostly based on the fact of the additional metal covering the tang and monkey tail. I however find a couple examples of similar setups in STANDARD GUIDE TO RAZORS 3rd edition by Ritchie & Stewart. Don't know about the box, but it came with the razor. Thank you for your time and help.

Thanked: 41Thanks, if it was the Torrey #992 would it not have some identifying marks on the blade like the one pictured?

Thanked: 13245Perhaps, it did in the past or perhaps with those metal tang covers it is a slightly different model... Looking very closely at the tang it almost looks as those might not have been stock, hard to tell....
But the overall design looks very similar....

I would agree with the seller hat it is a repaired straight. The fit and finish don't seem to demonstrate it as original to me. More likely,t oo, that the tang was covered in MOP that became damaged. The MOP would have had the maker's mark in it for identification.
If the metal overlays are genuine, can you see any hint of the maker's mark on them? Torrey is probably accurate; I;ve also seen similar razors from makers like Clauss and Boker.

Thanked: 41Thanks for your help. So assuming that it is a Torrey, any comments on that brand of str8?

Torrey razors have a good reputation, being an American razor (see Glenn's posts on the subject). Based on their performance and the packaging and markeing that I've seen, the company definitely knew what it was doing in the market. The models that I have are quality shavers.
