Thanked: 1D Special, now what?
First off, you guys are the best. Second, I NEVER would have been here without ya.
Third, where from here?
I got a Dovo Special for xmas and love it, but equally the way of shaving like this. My delima is I've never seen or heard (not that it does'nt exist) that "Then you upgrade to this".
I know its a quality entry level razor, and I know got bit by the SR bug about 2hrs after I opened it. But it feels "Light"
Is there a time frame where you just learn and then randomly upgrade to a DubD? Is there a undisputed "Best" SR or moderate next move for me?
I'm cool with trial & error but is there a Four Horseman or a blade that is "The One"?
Maybe just the SR Bug thing...
Get me in check guys!!!
Thanks, Boyd

yes, there is 'the one', actually several and I own it/them, and no, you can't have it.
next thing you would do is start trying out different razors - get a duck if that's what you fancy, but i'd say more important is to try the other sizes/grinds, not necessarily the brand names and the scales design.

Good advice there. You should find out what sizes & styles work for you before throwing large sums of money at blades. Some makers, such as duble duck & wade & butcher command higher prices, but there are countless others that shave just as well. I decided to broaden my range this year. I've acquired a broad spectrum of sizes & styles to see what i really like, rather than what i think i like.

Thanked: 1Thanks so much for the feedback. I just have nothing to go on so I guess I'm floundering a bit. So if my Special feels light, go to a random 7/8?
Agreed that I dont want to buy a pair of scales or a name but is a Bismark better than a Special, or just asthetically? Does the heritage of a DD or TI mean a better shave? As that is all I'm after.
I would love to give something to my Son when I go but that is secondary, and I'm only 40.
That line may bite me...
Thanks!

You don't necassarily need a 7/8. I've just acquired a 5/8 wedge that as a fair amont of heft to it. Bigger blades cost more. I think this is purely because men want BIG! It deep rooted in their subconcious. By all means try a 7/8, but there are plenty of options out there.

Thanked: 2209The Dovo Special is a thinly ground, very light blade. The next thing to try is a razor with a thicker grind. Look for a 5/8 or 6/8 "wedge" grind blade.
They are more common than a 7/8 or 8/8 blade size and cost less.
A Wade & Butcher Medium hollow blade would be a very nice change for you.
The usual source for these are vintage W&B or other Sheffield razors. Be sure to ask if it is a "wedge" or a thickly ground blade. They shave very differently from the Dovo or other full hollow blades.
Hope this helps,Randolph Tuttle, a SRP Mentor for residents of Minnesota & western Wisconsin

I wish I was 40 again
Great advice already. I'll just say you can buy, try & sell lots of razors. You don't have to keep every razor you try. Try plenty & watch your tastes & opinions change.
Don't limit yourself to any one size or brand until you've tried a few. Enjoy the process. The white gleam of swords, not the black ink of books, clears doubts and uncertainties and bleak outlooks.

Thanked: 18I have found after having bought and sold 5 or 6 different hollow ground razors some of witch are big name razors that i like the old vintage wedges the best. I bought one off of here of of ronny brown and i absolutely love it. I have bought three more in the past week or so and think that is were my shaving heart is going to continue to stay. I have a few hollow grounds that are great razors but the heft of the wedges seem to make them glide right through the hair with ease compared to them.
