Thanked: 4razor for noob?
Hello!
I am a complete straight razor newb, and was wondering if anyone had a suggestion for a razor that is on the cheeper side of things. Is is possible to get a razor and strop for under $100? As this is my aim. It doesn't have to be a brand new razor, but just shaving ready. Or just in need of some honing.
Thanks!

Try the classified section for both shave ready razors and strops. A couple of members here sell introductory sets as well. Although I have not tried either of these, both Double Arrow and Wapienica are also moderately priced options. You should be able to buy an introductory setup with your budget.

A hearty welcome to SRP. Concur with the above opinions concerning your first razor. Both sources will provide you an excellent value, along with a very nice "shave ready" razor. An absolute must unless you are already proficient with hones, or know of a someone who uses straight razors and can put an edge on it for you. Don't make the mistake of having someone do the honing just because he/she can sharpen knives (same thing goes for letting a knife shop hone it for you). Sharpening a knife and putting the correct edge on your razor are like comparing racquetball and tennis. They both use a racquet and a ball, but that's about all they have in common.
Another suggestion is to invest in Lynn's CD. A treasure trove of great information for the newbie!Last edited by dward; 01-22-2009 at 03:21 PM.

As a newbie myself, I went to Jim at Vintage Blades and got my original setup. The service was excellent, my razor came with a note that it had been honed by Lynn and everything was in working order. That, along with the fact that the shipping was the fastest I've seen, makes Vintage Blades tops in my book.
To echo the sentiments of much more experienced shavers on this site, ebay seems like a dangerous place unless you are schooled in the art of detection.

Kenrup used to have a shave ready razor, strop, brush, and styptic kit for less than a hundred. I second the suggestion to contact him
