Great Grandpas Razor
This is my first post, hope I can learn all there is to learn and soon be enjoying my shave. I told my grandfather I was looking to get into straight razor shaving, with a glow about him he said, "I have my dads straight razor, you want it." Of course I replied with an enthusiastic, yes !!! It has to be at least 80 years old as my grandfather is in his late 60's.
The case says J.S. Torre....then the lettering is missing. Los Angeles Ca. Tungsten Alloy, Registered Trademark.
There is still an edge on the blade but is in desperate need of honing, I tried to lathering up and testing the blade on my whiskers but it took to much effort and from my lurking here it seems it should be rather effortless with a proper honed/stropped blade.
Next stop...honing( if you all think it is still a viable shaving instrument).... soap... strop.... and I think a new brush. Already have the Clubman Pinaud after shave.I am very excited.

It's a Torrey! Fantastic razors. Looks in good condition too. Maybe consider getting it honed before investing in stones though?

Tons of honemeisters here- Kenrup seems to be very active, as is Gssixgun. Any of the guys that post an ad for it in the classifieds are more than qualified. I would think you might get it back from them a little faster than from Classic's website- just a guess, but seems like the web sites can get a little backed up sometimes.
That is a freaking awesome setup. I'm truly jealous. Wish I had been that well setup when I started. Well done.
EDIT- Been informed that Classic usually plans about a 1 week turnaround. Absolutely no offense meant to the fine folks there- gotten nothing but good service in my business with them so far.Last edited by kenneyty; 01-27-2009 at 09:20 PM. Reason: Foot-in-mouth disease

Welcome to SRP! The advice above to get yout straight honed by a honemeister is a good one. Later, if you like shaving w/ a straight you can pick up an other blade from an antique shop or fleabay to learn how to hone, and you will have a benchmark in your Grandfather's blade.
Your Torrey looks to be in great condition. You will like the shaves you'll get from it once you get your technique down.
Besides the blade you will need a strop and some good shave soap or cream and a brush. Read through the Wiki and you will find all the info you will need to get started and beyond.
Good luck!!“If you always do what you always did, you will always get what you always got.” (A. Einstein)

Is there a chance that this "Jessops Steel" razor is a Torrey, too?

Lynn,
That's super cool of you! And that razor will shave as good (or better!) than it did for your great grandad!
