Thread: Razor ID please ?

At Christmas/New Year I got an old razor from my girlfriends' grandfather. It's been used a lot by him, in a psychiatric warden. It might have belonged to his father as well, though I'm not entirely sure on that one.

On the box it says Garantie Solingen - Germany (pretty classic, everyone could've guessed that ) Ninus.
On the blade it says Ninus with some artwork, on the tang "Ninus Razor" on one side and "Solingen - Made in Germany - 1114"on the other side. The handle is broken white plastic (micarta perhaps?), two pins.

Does anybody know anything about Ninus or does someone have a razor like this one ?

I'm quite aware of the fact that this is a bland razor, old, worn and not worth much. It needs some cleaning and polishing due to corrosion stains, as well as a good sharpening. The edge is in pretty good condition though. No major nicks or what have you.

I hope to get it clean and sharp to put it in a small collection of myself. I might try using it, although I'm a bit cautious due to it's history in a warden.

Nice blade! I would be very careful to not polish the etching, as some polishes will take the etching right off. That would be a shame.

From the typography on the tang, and what can be seen of the blade etching I would say there is no doubt this razor was made in the Art Deco period (ca.1925-1939). You know that Ninus was the founder of Ninevah?

Thanks HarrisonFan, after looking around on the forums the last few days, I noticed that my razor is actually in quite good nick for being a used "vintage" razor. Could've been much worse if you keep in mind that it has been lying in a cupboard for plenty of years.
Currently I daren't touch it, least of all the etching.

drmoss, we guessed it must've come from that period, and it proves our idea that it from my GF's greatgrandfather. Thanks for that extra bit of info, hadn't heard anything about that.
