Thanked: 1Current production wedge?
Is anyone aware of a currently (mass) produced, true wedge ground, shave quality razor? It seems that Dovo and TI only produce hollow ground razors, and I am not interested in spending $300+ for a custom razor.
I have an antique shop razor that is almost a wedge (has the slightest bit of hollow grind), but it is in bad shape and is at the back of my restore list as I feel it will be very challenging to repair the edge damage and re-hone. I am interested in a new one to use in the meantime.
Is anything available?

I don't know of any in production. I'm surprised by that given the fact that hollow grinding requires greater precision.
If you're definition of a "true wedge" is a blade that is literally triangular in cross section with no concavity to it at all, I have yet to find a vintage razor that would fit such a description. The closest to a "true wedge" I have is a Bengall but, like you've found, if studied closely it has a slight concave grind. I'm thankful for that as I wouldn't want to hone a razor with literally no grind. I shudder to think of the stiction on my Shaptons such a razor would cause.

Nope none in product for a long time. maybe you could convince one of the custom guys to do one for you.
back in the 1800s they were popular before they knew how to do hollow grinds. Once they figured that out people didn't want these huge meatchoppers when they could get a more petite razor. Obviously they couldn't figure on the guys who inhabit this site eh?No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero

Thanked: 363Thebigspendur, Ha so true! I love the meatcleavers, but I'm a total newb to all of this straight razors, I have been DE shaving for roughly 1 1/2 years or so. Anyways, the Wapi I bought, is that a "true wedge" or slightly hollow ground? I think its a wedge shape, but I dont know enough to know the little nuiances.
Adam, Quick question, why does the blade have to be brand new? How about an older unused model? You might be able to find a mint condition true wedge easier and cheaper then buying a custom job, or perhaps look for a resale here in classifieds. Ok that's my newb two cents.
Cheers

Thanked: 1Well, that's what I was afraid of.
I am looking for a true (perfect triangle shape) wedge, just because I like the idea. I can't really make a good case for wanting one, I know they are a royal pain to hone and strop, I just want one.
Well, maybe this will motivate me to speed up my restore, or I could always keep an eye on the classifieds.
thanks all!

I think the only way to get a true one is to true up a pitted blade. They have been made with some degree of hollow for a very long time.
I thought the same things, it'd be cooll and flattened a WB. It was fun to have such a well heat treated piece of steel and grind it flat and sharp just as bench mark if nothing else... it's been almost a year since I used it. I hope i would be better able to get a good shave from it if I were to ready it up again. The edge turns out is sturdy enough to make a great leather knife.
an imp 132, or a spike, etc 20th c 5/8 9/16 wedge perhaps?

Thanked: 735Buy a rasurpur Legrelot 1/4 grind. It is brandy-new, and stiff as a wedge.
