The Black Star is a hollow ground carbon razor. As was mentioned above, it is a light razor. When proper honed, it gives an exceedingly close and comfortable shave.
The price to quality ratio make this razor a good buy. I used mine this morning and can attest to an outstandging shave.

I have a dovo micarta and it shaves very well. It is not too heavy in my opinion. I agree with you in that you should do it right the first time. If you have the money, might as well buy the one you want the first time around. However, be careful in not spending too much in the beginning just in case you decide straight razor shaving is not really for you. Then again, even if you spend a fortune, you can always sell off the stuff and get most of your money back. Good luck! Jeremy-

Thanked: 190You will very likely end up with more than one straight so don't fret too much about which to buy on your first purchase. Before I knew it, I had 4 and all are slightly different. I only bought a new straight when I felt comfortable with knowing my lastest straight very well.
My first was the Dovo Tortoise and it is still hanging in the rotation with the higher end razors. I use the .50 pasted strop on it every two shaves and this keeps it sharp to my preference.
It takes an edge well and always gives a very good shave. I recommend it for a first time buyer who is looking for a great first time straight and keeping the cost reasonable. If you find yourself favoring other straights over time you can easily sell this one on SRP as they have a good reputation.
Dovo Stainless razors work well, but they do take more effort to keep them sharp and they cost more.
Good Luck,
