Good Quality Stainless Steel Razors
I have found that taping my razors does not give me a long lasting edge. I use no tape, and while it may take an additional 10 to 25 laps (very subjective based on technique) I get a finer edge, and one that lasts longer. I also notice that I get an almost silent shave. I have never needed more than my 4/8k Norton and a diamond pasted strop to get these results. .25 is way too harsh but CrO2 and or .5 is right in the comfort zone. I am holding final confirmation on a felt strop from SRD and can only imagine the possibilities but...

Glad it is working for you. I use tape myself as I have too many to try and figure out which had tape and which didn't. I'm getting good results this way. Could they be better ? Dunno . The felt strop from SRD is great for tough steel with the 0.5 diamond spray. I bet you'll love it.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Is this specifically with reference to stainless razors?
I've heard the Friodurs can be a bit finicky to hone, and sometimes taping helps. I've heard some vastly different figures with regards to layers of tape, but I've never had to hone my own Friodur, so I couldn't say.
I honed up a 4/8 Rega-Cut, which is a stainless blade, and I found she took a very nice edge without any tape at all. She's a quiet shaver too, but that's because she's about 3/4 hollow and quite small; no room for flexing in that blade.

Thanked: 156My experience with stainless is that they lose their edge slightly faster to a similar quality carbon steel blade.

My stainless blades hold an edge longer than my carbon. But then I might have to acquire more blades just to be sure
