How to start a razor collection
Ok, so here is the situation:
I am relatively new to straight razor shaving, and would like to start a modest collection. The biggest hurdle I am facing is a lack of funds, an issue I think most people are having right now. I have about enough funds to purchase around three (give or take) modestly priced straight razors.
The question is this, what three straight razors would you recommend to start a collection? While the razors wouldn't have to be in mint condition, they would have to be good everyday shavers. And although it isn't absolutely necessary, I would like a variety of blade types.
My price range is about $200
Can any of you old pros help me out?Last edited by Bone; 03-22-2009 at 09:05 PM. Reason: Clarification

WHat is your price range individually and total for 3 'modestly priced' straights?

Thanked: 156Collection to collect and stare at and not use? Or shaving rotation?
Shaving rotation I would say get these:
Smiling wedge
straight wedge
extra hollow
1/4 hollow
faux frameback
Its a completely different experience with each of those blades. Its pretty cool to shave with a different style of grind each day.
edit: jumped on the classifieds yesterday, saw about 10 razors for under $50. B&B has a BST place as well, except you have to really be on the ball there. People buy things within minutes sometimes.

You've really got to figure out what kind of blades appeal to you. I would suggest browsing the galleries, razor clubs, SOTD's, and ebay to get a feel for your taste. Then, figure out what you want and start hunting. If you see a razor that's on your "list," figure out what the blade is worth to you and decide whether or not to snap her up.

Thanked: 1903Not an old pro by any means, but I would do either of the following:
- Start shopping in SRP's Classifieds section. Big bang for the buck, and all the razors I bought there were as advertised or better.
- Invest in a decent set of hones (cf. What hone(s) do I need? - Straight Razor Place Wiki) and start shopping at auction sites (cf. One way to hone an eBay or damaged blade - Straight Razor Place Wiki).
- See 2. but buy from antique stores.
Good luck.

If your starting with a clean slate and I was in your position knowing what I do now I would concentrate on U.S made razors. They are great quality razors that shave with the best of them AND in most cases they can be had for a song.
There are many brands like Shumate, Torrey, Union, Genco, Cattauragus-many others. No matter how many men you kill you can't kill your successor-Emperor Nero
