Default A beautiful pair of tortoises

    Hi Guys,

I bought this beautiful couple in original box at an antique fair last week. They are original tortoise scales and the silver escutcheon plates have never been engraved. I was told they have never been used. There is minor rust and (I think no pitting). I have already contacted a member of this forum to restore them to their full glory and make them shave ready.

My question is regarding the brand. I have never heard of it and cannot find anything in the internet. It reads “J. SOREL IN CRAZ” both in the box and engraved in the tangs. Any ideas where it’s from? French, Belgium? A rough idea of its age?

One of the scales has very minor chips on the edge for the rest these are in very good condition and should restore beautifully.

I do apologize for the lesser quality pictures and look forward to your comments.

    Eric

Very Nice!!! I love the look of tortoise. Hope you get to enjoy them for many years! To me they are fine the way they are, just need some honing. If you do get them restored I would love to see the finished results. Thanks for sharing.

    Very nice indeed.
Are you sure it's not Graz rather than Craz which would place them as Austrian?

You are absolutely right! Spot on! Closer inspection (with a magnifying glass) prove they do say “In Graz”. So they are Austrian, and “Sorel” is the name of the of the maker I would guess, pretty much like Joe Chandler or Maestro Livy would be now days, thanks
