    Default Wedge vs Hollow Grind

I have been restoring razors fro a couple of months now and I have just sold a wedge that I restored. It was my first wedge restore and its in the Workshop forum. My question is , is a wedge supposed to have a different feel than a hollow grind? The person who bought the razor said it was a great shaver and I agree that it gave as smooth a shave as I have tried, but for some reason the hollow grinds seem more comfortable to my face. I would love to hear your comments because if they should feel the exact same I need to practice honing or send them out.

Wedges are far stiffer. The blade has no flex. I feel there's more work in honing a wedge, as the bevel is far bigger than a hollow.
I find i'm more likely to nick myself with a wedge, but at the same time the shave is very comfortable. Pleasure & pain i guess!
Different grinds will feel different, that's why people develop a preference.

    Default wedge

with hollow ground you will get close shave then wedges.wedges will shave heavy beard people better and keep edge longer.hope this helps.
i sold one wedge i was unable to keep in my hands more then 2 minuts was heavy blade i have ever had.who bought send me email and said that is the best razor he had.hmmmmmmmmm.go figure it out

Personal preference is what it comes down to....

Me I am not only a hollow grind user but I am picky about what type of hollow,,, My perfect razor is a Extra Full Hollow (Singing) 11/16 and a Spike Point, and normally American or German... And OMFG if it has cracked ice scales I am all in

All that being said I shaved with that Wicked Wade this morning and got a great shave....but not as close as the C-MON HF yesterday personal preference dictated by each person's face and beard....

Thank god we have so many choices

I have honed up and restored edges on hundreds of these old puppies. They usually are not much fun and typically are ground or honed up with multiple bevels and uneven honing on the spines which to make matters worse are different on both sides. When honed, they provide a very nice comfy shave and you really neither hear or feel the whickers go away. They can be really nice looking razors, especially if reground and re-handled or when found in excellent to mint condition with original scales.

For the money and the time that gets spent on these, give me 1/2 hollow-Extra Hollow all day long.

Tis definitely a personal preference thing in my book.

As it has already been told. These are personal preferences. To whom that is pleasant and than more conveniently. I like a wedge more, but have a shave under mood.
    I have a wide choice.

I like something in between. I find a half hollow has good momentum in the shave without the tendonitis of using a wedge.

Hmm... I think Im still to new at this to have an honest preference, I have used both wedge and hollow ground, To me it feels like the wedge gives a better shave or easier to shave with, its really hard for me to say. Im not sure if its the extra weight of the wedge blade that is giving me this feel I like. The hollow ground gives me a great shave as well , but lately I have been leaning toward the wedge.

THanks for all the input. I shaved with a wedge this morning again, and I am glad to know it isn't my mind playing tricks. Teh wedge seems to pop the hairs with more force I guess, but I can actually say it seems to shave closer than my hollows, but the after effects aren't as comfortable. After reading these comments I can now understand why I like hollow grinds and have preference. Hearing from the more experienced members was good, because I didn't want to be confusing a bad hone job with differences in feel.
    Thanks a Lot!

For me, old tender face. A sharp wedge Guarantees two things ... a very close shave and a lot of blood. I think it comes from it being harder to keep a very light touch. With a very light razor, just the weight of the razor seams perfect, rising and falling over bumps, moles ...ect.. My Frederick Reynolds 7/8 wedge makes the hairs jump off my face just before the edge get to them, then proceeds to plane off every imperfection on my face...... every time.
