Current Production
Okay, so I've been here for a few days and I see lots and lots of vintage razors floating around, but I'm not sure what razors are currently available other than Dovo and some higher end like Mastro Livi and other customs available on SRD.
So, besides Dovo, are there any other SR makers that are in current production? Which ones are good, if any besides Dovo?

Thanked: 346Thiers Issard and Dovo are the big ones. TI is very good, though their QC has been poor lately. Still my favorite brand though - I love the way they shave. They've supposedly bought some new equipment that will improve QC (their old equipment was apparently nearly a century old), and if the new Silverwing razor is any indication they're about to improve tremendously in this regard.
Giesen-Forstoff I think still makes razors. I think they make the Fromm and Timor brands, and possibly the new C-Mon's that are floating about.
Henckels still makes Friodurs, though it's possible that Dovo is making them under contract.
You can still buy new C-Mons, but they aren't what they used to be. May actually be Dovo or GF made. This is actually pretty standard Solingen fare, Dovo made Pumas for awhile.
Heribert Wacker makes his own razors under the Jungmeister label, and also is restarting Dorko production (he used to work at Dorko back in the day).
Boker has restarted in some capacity. They are using Heribert Wacker for now, but supposedly retraining their own guys as well.
And Revisor is back in production again.
Then there are the low-volume custom or semi-custom makers like Livi, Williams, Chandler, Ellis, Zowada, etc.Last edited by mparker762; 04-08-2009 at 05:27 PM.

That's about as complete a list as you get them.

Thanked: 174Dovo/Merkur Solingen Germany and Thiers Issard France make the bulk of modern quality mass production straight razors.
Dovo use both Swedish and German steel and make both stainless and carbon steel blades.
TI use carbon steel from Sheffield in England and forge the steel in hot lead which "in theory" leads to a harder steel which again "in theory" means a sharper edge.
In truth both producers make superb and poor examples of the straight razor. In truth it is a bit of a hit and miss affair as to whether you will get a good or bad example of a straight razor..
Both the German and the French factories are working to their limits to meet current demand and this has lead to quality control issues from both producers.
There are a few one off independents. Wackers Soligen Germany springs to mind and there are a few specialist blade smiths in the USA, Germany and Italy that make bespoke razors. Although pricey, the independents will make something very special for a straight razor user who knows what he wants but at a price.
In addition to the new razors, there are many hobbyists who take old vintage razors and will make the old razors like new. Many hobbyiest renovators sell on this "SRP" forum and in addition there are a few reputable restoreres who sell on E Bay.

Thanked: 735
I just placed an order there a couple of days ago....
He sells great stuff!
I followed your link just now, and saw for the first time this set of beauties:
Fantastic stuff! A 1/4 grind and a wedge?! Brandy-new???
If I hadn't already blown a bunch of cash on my previous order, I would jump on this one!
Or maybe I'll just go into debt...
