    Default 'The Velvet Gilder' Restoration/Modification

I bought this razor on ebay for a song. I didn't really like the look of it but it was unusual and nobody else had bid on it.
I can't remember exactly how much I paid, but it was somewhere under £5 including shipping.

Does anybody have any information about this razor? Google hasn't turned up anything of use.

I'm afraid the tang stamp is practically illegible due to the corrosion.
    I can make out:
QUAL (or maybe DUAL?) SILVER STEEL
    *next line is illegible*
    GROUND IN GERMANY

I'd love to know a bit more about this razor.

When I opened the package, I had a bit of an unpleasant surprise. The celluloid 'scales' were badly cracked and the razor had some pretty good rust where it had come into contact with the celluloid parts. I don't know if it was celluloid rot or just from being closed while wet, but either way it had rusted quite heavily.
You will have noticed above that I put 'scales' in inverted commas. They weren't actually scales as we know them, but a travel case type thing that the razor folded into. They were very ugly.
After examining them, I decided that even if I managed to repair them, the design was horrible anyway, and with the doubt about whether celluloid rot had set in, I decided to bin them. Actually I didn't bin them, I set fire to them. Burning celluloid is pretty spectacular

Onto the blade. I wish I'd taken some 'before' photos, I never seem to remember. After some laborious sanding to remove the active rust and some of the staining, I was left with this:

The blade had a round point, but it was the roundest point I have ever seen. It looked like a spoon or something. Also, someone had in the past honed into the rounded part so that almost the entire bottom half of the point was bevelled. Weird.
The overly round point looked kinda dorky, so I decided to grind it down a little. Then I though that since I was going to have to do so much work on this blade, why not go the whole hog and make myself a square point razor?
I ground the point down on my bench grinder. This is ok to do if you take great care. I dipped it in water before and after every grind, and I held it in contact with the wheel for less than a second each time. It took ages to remove the metal by this method, but I wanted to avoid heat buildup. It was still risky, but it worked fine, not a hint of colour change and the blade didn't even get hot enough to evaporate the water.

After a lot of sanding to smooth things out and remove the grinding marks, I ended up with this:

I still have a lot of sanding to do, you can see thee pitting in the following photos. I don't know if I'll manage to get them all out of this thin blade, but I'll do better than this. I actually used a coarse abrasive stone on the tang because the pitting was so deep. It worked very well and it didn't take long to sand out the marks that the stone left.

Now I have a dilemma. I am going to cast my own scales in resin for this blade, but I can't decide between black or ivory colour. I have posed the blade with one of each. I am wavering slightly towards the ivory, but opinions are welcome. Please excuse the rough appearance of the scales, they are casting rejects. I'll be casting some proper ones once I have decided on the colour...

Wow! Great job on the grinder!

I'm going to say it looks to me like it belongs with the lighter ivory colored scales...

I think I'd be too scared to bring a blade to the grinder like that.....at least right now....maybe once I get some experience under my belt...

Wow, where to begin? So many things to say. (when do I not have many things to say?)

Good deal. 5 pound with shipping is not bad at all.

I don't know if that was celluloid rot or not, but if it was, it was nothing compared to some I've seen.

Those little travel razor scales are fantastic for what they are, but if you plan to use the thing regularly, I'd have trashed them too, especially since that could very well have been early rot.

Excellent job on the grinder, and I'd have made the same call if I had the skills and equipment. I know that round points are supposed to be a little easier to shave with, without cutting yourself, and I've stabbed myself pretty good twice now with the corner of my henckels, but round point razors just don't look right to me. Good call, and good job doing it.

As for the scales, I think I'd really go with the black. No specific reason, it just looks better to me that way. Black scales with silver pins.
