Thread: Sterilising blades...

Bought my pre owned razor through the classifieds here from the Blacksmith...who by the way is an excellent guy to deal with and a great craftsman.

Typically, when you buy razors from other members do they need to be sterilised/disinfected in some fashion?

Cleaning your razor woudl be a good thing, and depending on your own preferences you can go up to disinfecting it even. Rinse with hot water and maybe some soap, if you want use disinfecting soaps, or use some rubbing alcohol. If you have some alcohol-based AS or and EDT/EDC lying around that you don't like, that contains a fair dose of the good ol' germkiller as well.

When I got my razors in, I just used some hot water and a bit of soap, but it's part of a personal preference of course and how reliable you view your sources.

I don't have any of those specialty disinfectants or germicides, but I typically will spray some lysol on questionable blades and let it sit. I do this a few times. I'm not a doctor or anything, and I have no idea if it's actually doing anything, but it does say it's a disinfectant. The back shows what it covers, and it seems to be a lot of the baddies. I think maybe there is one of the hepatitis variations that it doesn't cover, though? Or at least, it doesn't mention/guarantee that it does.

Anyway, maybe it's not the best stuff for the job, I'm just mentioning it because it's something you might already have laying around.

IIRC rubbing alcohol is OK, but doesn't disinfect everything. I'm pretty sure using lysol is better than rubbing alcohol alone, but again, I could be wrong.

If it isn't rusty just wash it with some lqd. dish washing soap. If it is rusty get a tetnus shot first.

I treat my razors with Camelia oil or TuffGlide and then wash them with alchohol before stropping but many are convinced that alchohol is insufficient dor disinfecting --- If I feel that if a blade needs to be disinfected, I will put it in slow boiling water for about three minutes and then a disinfectant like Lysol and wash it with distilled water and soap.

Boiling water is not hot enough to affect the steel blade. Just don't use an acetylene torch. Dum-Dee-Dum-Dum...!!!
