Thanked: 156Heirlooms
So, I was thinking just now about who would get my Ellis if I were to die. And the answer would be my brother. Who obviously wouldn't know what the **** to do with it. And that bothers me.
And then I thought about that new post where a gentleman wants to restore his grand dad's razor. And then I thought about another member's razor I'm currently working on which belonged to his great grandfather. Unfortunate part of that story is some cousin of his took a dremel to it and now its in worse shape than if he left it alone.
Anyway, it got me thinking to where all the old vintage blades come from. And it dawned on me that they are the heirlooms! They are the old razors someone's relative used and who's heirs have decided to sell said razors for cash. Ok, some of them came from barber shops and people who just don't want to use a straight anymore, but the very old ones were definitely some dead guy's razor. (tried to make it sound more PC, but failed)
Anyway, just a thought. Not that I don't mind receiving these razors and making sure they get used for their intended purpose.... but its interesting how some of us managed to get our treasured grandfather's razor, while other people ebay them.
Btw, my grandad is still alive and I will get his razor! Of course.....its electric. He starting using electrics since they first came out. Not entirely sure what he used back in the 20s... I suppose they had DEs back then. He doesn't like shaving.

Thanked: 84I recieved one of my razors from a class-mate of my daughters parents.
It is a nice 5/8 good quality german razor and it's proper box. Took a great edge too.
The owners were doing a car-boot sale and found it in their attic. They were going to throw it away, untill my wife told them I'd put it to use.
I think it belonged to the mothers grand father.

My wife's maternal side of her family comes from Sheffield. I'd obviously known that since we'd met but never really considered what the meant until last night. So this morning I had her call her mother to see if "just maybe" HER father left a straight or two in a box after he pass on... Man that sure would be nice to have a box of steel show up! But, it seems no one recalls any straights among the things he left. Oh well, nice thought anyway.
If I could just meet someone somewhere who's parents are from (or still live in) Solingen... I have my brother combing the Middle East for me so maybe I'll have a nice surprise show up as a result of that "mission". :-)
