MAAS gives off a slightly ammonia/metallic smell when you do this on DD's I have cleaned more than my share of them... ..
by the way, do you recommend cleaning DD bolsters and scales with something other than MAAS to avoid this smell, or do you recommend using the MAAS anyway?

Perfect solution... just shaving a couple of times should clear it up....

Yes I use MAAS on them it not only cleans and polishes it protects them after...

I do add a coat of Renwax after but it is just my OCD it probably isn't needed....

If you've got a penetrating oil like Kroil or wd40 try spraying some under the bolsters, see if you can't flush it out. If you use wd40 be sure to oil it afterwards with something heavier.

Nope, it's acetate breakdown that smells of vinegar, not celluloid.

Not necessarily James - there are two types: celluloid dinitrite and celluloid acetate. What do they both have in common ... cellulose.

What about putting the razor into a container together with a flat dish of milk overnight?
Usually the milk absorbs scents of all sorts.

that's interesting. I left it out just open and the stench is more or less gone. I'm going to use it for a few days in a row and all the washing and stropping will likely put an end to it. But that's a cool idea about the milk.
