T. Scargill Sheffield
Ok all I need some help on identity and dates for the following razor. it is heavy short tang with very straight scales that look to be ivory. It has a brass wedge and brass pins with no washers. The pictures should help to show the above.

You misplaced a period in reading that stamping. The name is T.S. Cargill, and from the looks of those scales I would guess that they are probably made of bone.

Thank you Walt this is why I stepped up to ask.
When I read the stanping there is the same distance on all letters past the S but a larger space between the T and S. I will do a search for Cargill and see what comes up.
On the scales it looks like a bit of pearlescence can be secene in hand, but I most likely do not know a thing about it. It does look similar to some ivory pieces that are in my wifes family. But I really don't care one way or the other as it is a nice piece to me. The scales need a little cleaning and that is why I guessed as to material, I don't wan tto do something that will damage them.
I also must mention that it is shave ready.
Do you have more info?
Thanks again.Last edited by scrapcan; 05-18-2009 at 08:05 PM.

In Sheffield Directories of 1852 and 1857 no Scargill (or Cargill). Only this:
Scargill John, victualler, King's Arms Hotel, 2 Old Haymarket (1852 Directory).

I did a quick Google on T. Scargill, T.S. Cargill, Scargill Sheffield, Cargill Sheffield, etc. and didn't turn up anything useful. But I did find a listing for T. S. Cargill in the "Standard Guide to Razors - third edition". But there was no additional information in the listing. The reason I suggested the scales might be bone was because of what appears to be dark blood vessel spots in several areas. But, that's just an observation and not a statement of fact.

much thanks
I did the searches also and was not able to find anything on the net. I had exhausted the resources at hand and had but one left at my disposal. this forum is it.
As stated I have no idea if they are ivory or bone, they are natural I can tell you that. The blood streaks you see are actually surface dirt/grunge. It looks like red adhesive from tape/label. I just go it and have not had time to clean.
I know you guys will help out and the answer will come to me. I must be patient.
If more pictures are need I can see what I can do.Last edited by scrapcan; 05-18-2009 at 08:05 PM.
