7 day set = Can anyone tell my if this is any good?
Hi I have bought these on ebay and yould like to know what you think; is it a descent set of razors. The sellers was asking $300 but they sold for $335.
I tend to think they are good razors, they are in good condition andthere is a lot of file work on the spine but would like your opinion as I haven't seen any other like these.
This is the seller's description:
I bought this set about 8 years ago to use (I'm a long time straight razor shaver), but I never did anything with them other than store them away with a light coat of oil. The word when I bought them was that they were given to an Allied General - I forget his name - as a present near the end of WWII while he was serving in Germany. While I have nothing to confirm any of this, the style of the razors and box looks to be between 50 and 75 years old.
I do know the razors have never been used, you can tell by looking at them. There is no indication on any of the blades that they have been sharpened, and there are none of the typical water stains, stains around the pivot pin, or soap accumulations that use will show. The handles may show a little "shop wear" where they look fogged along the sides, like they have traveled while they sat in a box on their sides. But this "shop wear" is so consistent on all the handles I think they came from the factory that way, as they wouldn't have gotten that from this box. A couple of blades show some very tiny spots on the blade, maybe from being in a humid climate before I got them.
As you can see from the pictures, they are beautiful and have style. Being unused, all the etching and coloring on the blades is flawless. They have some very handsome machining and knurling on the blade backs. The scales and pins are all tight, unbroken, unchipped. They are all 5/8" blades.
The box shows slight wear on the corners, but is otherwise little used, and certainly far from being beat up.
All of the handles say "Solingen" in a gold or brass inlay. Most of the tangs say "Best silver steel Solingen" and a couple just say "Solingen". The blade backs state the days of the week in yellowish/gold lettering. The box shows no lettering or labels on it.Last edited by Jacques13; 06-01-2009 at 03:11 PM.

I'm by no means an expert, but a 7 day Solingen set is a good thing. Always. It must have been some kind of commemorative thing, because all the souvenir things are towns in Germany.

Thanked: 293Well they LOOK great, but I am not experienced enough to judge based on pictures. I don't see any indication that they would be Pakistani junk, though I have heard that some of the Pakistani manufactures embellish a bit by putting "Solingen" on their "blades".
For the price you paid, I'm sure you could pull something similar on eBay if you found they were not up to snuff.
Good luck with them!
Ogie

I remember seeing that set on the bay a few days ago .
It's a nice set, I would say 335 was fair given it's condition.

I can say this.
They are pretty.
Some one correct me, but if they were a commemorative set then they would have been made for export. The odd thing is that the razors do not say Silvr Stahl (sp). Which means silver steel.
Due to the trade of between Solingen and Sheffield it is entirely possible that the blanks were made in Germany and sent to Sheffield for finishing. I know that Germany did this with MOP, so they may have done this as well. That would explain the lack of German script on the razor.
All just guesses.

I bet if you hone one of them up .... or have it honed by a honemiester... you will find them to be great shavers. Most if not all of the Solingen made razors were top notch from what I have seen and heard.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I saw these on the 'bay as well ...
I'm no expert, but they seemed to be something made for tourists.
They look great and they probably shave quite well.
I wouldnt be able to shave with the one labeled 'Hamburg' hahaha
Overall, thats a pretty cool set you've got there.
Hone them up and try them out.

Hi. Here is my experience with these beautiful razors
I got one shave ready (extremely easy to hone) and shaved 5 times with it, just stropping before shave and I must tell you that they are not "just souvenirs" but very fine shaving tools. This is my fifth shave, BBS of course, and with no irritation what so ever, just a perfect shave.
I use prehshave cream from Proraso, shaving cream from DADA, a C&E best badger brush, alum stone and Cool Ice gel to finish.
I don't understand why nobody bid on these fine rasors when they where on sale on Ebay at a very fair price. The seven day set was in perfect condition and just needed a bit of elbow grease to get them sparkling. They are in "new" condition, never have been honed.

it's hardly surprising that they are nice shavers, but most people would rather spend $100 for one razor than $350 for 7.
plus until you hone them and try them you never know how it will shave, if at all.
they were sold as a souvenier, most of the decription would be equally applicable to letter openers.
you took the risk and it paid off.
