Also, don't be put off because you've never heard of the maker, and don't buy knakered blades because you have.
Big fan of antique stores here. Much prefer it to ebay now.

Thanked: 10Yes, my experience in the UK has been that antique shops are a very good source of straight razors and superior to ebay; also in these locations more straights than DE razors. On average I am paying £5-10 for vintage Solingen items, some in superb condition e.g. Bismarck, Fisher, Puma.

Thanked: 21I acquired a few razors from my dad's basement (he's got a full beard and has as long as I can remember) but all the razors I bought were from antique shops. They have all worked out very well for me except for one- a big Sheffield chopper that has a crack in it. I didn't see the crack until after I bought it. There were a few small chips and nicks that honed out pretty nicely, but that crack isn't going anywhere. That blade was only $5, with no scales. The most I've paid was about $25, I think, and usually $15 or less.
