Does anyone own custom made razors? Want
to brag about them, complain about them?
I finnally broke down an ordered a matching pair
(except the spine) of 8/8's, spanish point, made
for me. I'll be letting you know when I get them.

Who did you order from? There are some pretty amazing makers out there right now.
I own a few, and love them all, from the ones with just new scales and a touched up blade to full customs.
Have a Robert Williams coming that I should be hearing about any day now, as I was close to the top of the list some time ago....
Thanks for the reply!
Yep, Robert Williams is making my razors too!
He's making mine too. Should be getting it in a couple of weeks hopefully! I'm trying to remain calm, or i'll get myself too excited!!!
I don't know quite what you intended with this thread.
My custom came from L.R. Harner. It was the second he made in this style (after Lynn's). I am very satisfied. It is 15/16 and the only really large blade I have.
I should use it tonight!!
I also have one on order from RW and i should be up on the que very soon now. I have a Livi and a J. Chandler , both which I love to shave with.
I have a few customs already (Chandler, Warner, & Livi), and a RW on order too. ;)
What gets me excited is seeing more knifemakers (e.g., posts on knife forums) venturing into making razors. To me, they are kinda like modern day equivalents of all the different brands/manufacturers of decades ago -- lots of different materials, styles, and great craftsmanship.
I also have a Robert Williams Ive been using for about a year now and i love it. Its my every day shaver :)
I have a few. Livis, Zowadas and Chandlers, but no RW....yet. I love them all and don't really see any downside to the customs other than the price. Even so, I think they are a good value for what you receive.
Congratulations on your Williams. Enjoy using them.
Where are you located in Ohio?
Congrats on getting a matching pair from Robert. My Williams is the most well balanced shaver I've got, and Robert is a great guy to deal with.
Excuse my ignorance, but how do you guys start up a conversation when it comes to ordering a custom?
I know guys like Max have ads in the classifieds, but what about the rest?
I'm surprised that a lot of us got the
same idea at the same time, that is
to order a Robert Williams at the same
time. What we have to do now is, show
and tell, when we get them.
I've been shaving with a Bismarck 7/8
spanish point for years, time for an up
grade. I only have two razors, my
Robert Williams razors will replace them
both. Ditto on Robert Williams to be easy
to deal with. He's a great guy!
Bismarck 7/8 Spanish point, huh? Dovo origen? Is the razor in question promised to someone?
I did not have to wait for my Robert Williams razor, I just went to the shavingshop.com and purchased two from John Crowley. John still have three more for sale. Juan.
If I go to a razor maker and get them to combine the blade I want with the handle I want, is that a custom? They already make the handle and the blade, just not together.
It would be like going to Dovo and getting them to put the Renaissance blade on the Desert Ironwood.
When you all get them post them here:

Love to see any new customs!
Am I the only one with an Ellis!?
Your lucky to have an Ellis. He wouldn't even put me on his wait list. Are all these razors, Chandler, Williams,Zowada, over 1000 dollars? I have a Livi NOS. It only cost 300.
I have yet to pull the trigger on a razor costing over 1k. Other than Aesthetics, would I know where all that money went?
While the high end Williams may very well cost over $1k, I know he offers razors under $1k. Wasn't there Livis on the SRD site for under $1k too? I don't know, I try not to look at the price for fear of being tempted.
Wonder how much an Ellis is really worth? No one wants to sell theirs and getting on the list is probably not going to happen.... Anyway, heres some porn because I think this thread is a little short on pics.

Every one of my customs was under $1K, in fact they were all under $500. I've had good fortune & timing in buying these.
It's debatable if the higher cost gets a better shaving razor. It really is the aesthetics, and attention to detail in the design & manufacture, of the custom makers' pieces (plus their limited availability) that make them desireable and sought after.
I couldn't get on the waiting list either, Zib. Probably a good thing! There are a couple of customs that i want above all others. One's nearly mine, the other was an Ellis!
I think that with a few of the makers, you have to push the options to get around $1k. From my limited research, if you were able to restrain yourself, you'd get one for a surprisingly reasonable price.
From me you have to really push the envelope to end up at 1K. They start at $300.00. I'd prefer to let others discuss whether or not you can tell where the money went when you shave with a Williams razor. That's too subjective for me to remark on, I think.
That's really very reasonable for something that's been hand crafted. It amazed me when i made my initial enquiry to you Robert!
Robert's prices are more than reasonable. :tu: So are Bill's, but as has been discussed, good luck getting on the list to get on the list now.
How long is wait on the list? (probably not long enough for Mrs Py to get over my latest round of RAD, HAD, and CAD).
I've been waiting since 14th October 08 for mine from Robert. It should be ready very soon. Any day in fact! He was pretty accurate on the waiting time. The interlude allows your ideas develop. :)
Went back through my correspondence, and mine was ordered on 20 October 2008. :hmmm::hmmm:
:D:D
Was there a late October ordering binge for his razors, or what? I think there should be at least one more (I think) order between me and the top of that list....
This is going to be my workhorse razor. Funny, how my first full custom is purposefully not a "bling" razor, but is one that is meant to be the "if the world ends, and I only get to take one razor..." razor.
15/16 S-30V square point, thumb notch, top and bottom jimps 1/2 hollow, micarta scales, hammered spine. Yummy.
8 months might be enough.
maybe 6/8 stainless, mirror finish, thumb notch, lower jimps and star spine in American Elk horn?
waaay to soon to discuss this with Mrs Py.:nono:
Now I have to find someone to make a brush in Elk.
There was a big bubble of people getting into the work queue between October and November. I'm running between 5-8 months, varying somewhat due to the peaks and valleys of order activity - and me not accidentally using the grinder to trim my fingernails, which happens from time to time. It's very, very efficient at doing this.
I own a few custom knives, but I don't yet own a custom razor. Seeing the ones you guys have, though, is making me seriously consider it. The Livi, Williams and Ellis razors you guys have are works of art!
On a recent visit to my favorite local knife shop, they had two made by Greg Lightfoot. Damascus blades with carbon fiber & mammoth ivory scales:
Greg Lightfoot CF/Mammoth Ivory Scales
Greg Lightfoot Carbon Fiber Scales
They seemed pretty heavy to me, but felt well balanced. They looked almost too nice to shave with. Do you guys mainly keep your customs as collectibles, or do you shave with them regularly?
Cheers,
Jeff

Again, I got my RW#3 by just calling John Crowley and 2 days later another RW razor, no ordering line or seven months wait. Shaving while others wait in anticipation. Juan.
