    Smile Hess 44

I have a Hess 44, which I, by ignorance, ruined the edge when honed it as a pocket knife. I put it up with great sadness. After I leanred how to hone and procured the proper wet stones, I tried again to hone the Hess 44. This time I paid attention to the lessons I had learned in honing straight razors. It was a miracle, the edge came back to life and it shaved great, so yours should has potential. The Hess are great razors.

awwww crap i think i ruined it.... i attempted honing and the blade didnt seem to take an edge at all... now im no pro but i can sharpen a razor i have made both my boker and red imp shavable (although i need a 8k/12k to get it even better) and this Hess i cant even get to be sharper then a butter knife. im honing it exactly the same way as my other razors (all of which have come out fine)

and i know this may be a forbidden act but i even tried the paper cut test (as the thumb pad and hair tests were failures) the blade wouldnt even cut the paper it just crumpled under the blade.... does anyone know any enlightening tips about hess razors because im about to bury it.

Take your time on the lower grit getting a good bevel set. These blades are very hard steel and take a long time on the stones to set a bevel. Don't even attempty to polish on higher grits till that bevel is set.

I had the same experience you had. I went back to the 1k until the edge or bevel was set. I tried two to three time to hone until I finally had the bevel. Try 1k as a bevel setter. Hess are good razor so keep on honing. Juan.

You need to drop back to at least a 4000 grit and work it there until you get the initial bevel sorted out. If you could go back to a 1200 or 2000 for a few strokes it would help.

If you have an exceptionally dull razor and put it on a fine grit stone all you are doing is polishing a dull blade edge. You need to re-establish the bevel.
