Thanked: 30VINTAGE FRITZ BRACHT
Hello
I purchase a Fritz Bracht Dovo #38 razor from Ebay for $26.00 and I just received it today. I am new to straight razor shaving and I knew when I purchased this razor that it was not in shave ready condition. I sent some messages with pictures to some of the people on this site that advertise razor restoration and I have got some responses back that say it will be about $45.00 dollars to restore this razor. I just wanted some opinions as to whether or not there is a big difference in manufacturing quality of this razor as compared to a brand new Dovo razor. I am asking this because I have got different opinions on restoring this razor or buying a brand new one instead ? Also can anybody tell me how old this razor might be ?
Thank You
Mark

Welcome to the forum. You will get lots of help from experienced people here, but it's always best to post photos of the razor you are asking about. It is always easier to give you a good answer if folks can get a look at it.

Do you mind giving us a pic of the Fritz?
It is easier to fool people than to convince them they have been fooled. Twain

Thanked: 156Up to you. I would do it myself at that price, but...
A hone will cost you $20, so the actual restore is only $25. Figure your going to have to get it honed anyway and $25 is not bad. Question you want to ask yourself is how pretty do you want it to look? Take a look at the restorer's work and ask him how its going to turn out and decide if the end result is what you want.
If not, then just get it honed and buy some metal polish and shine it up yourself with a rag and a few hours.

It is item # 110399983210. The seller says it is chipped. It just looks stained to me in the photo? I live in your neck of the woods. If you want to bring it by the shop I work in and drop it off I will hone it for you free and you can pick it back up the following day or whenever. Shoot me a PM if you want to do that.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

i've liked every fritz bracht dovo better than the currently made ones.
so when it's all nice and shiny you'll end up paying $85 which is what the entry level dovo will set you back.
but you've already spent $25 and so to me it seems that the cheapest option is to spend the rest.
of course it doesn't matter much what you're shaving with when you start - most razors will perform just the same until you become fairly advanced.
so at the end of the day it's your pick - if you don't want it to look really polished and you have more time than money you could buy some sandpaper and make it a bit nicer yourself.
finally the seller's description on the shaving part seems a bit odd. it looks like he's pretending to know what he's doing, but he does sound incompetent. have some of the well established guys hone it for you. if i were you i'd send it to glen, oh wait a deja-vu....
