Default Info on a Dubl Duck... Shavette?

Hey guys, just bought this on the bay:

dubl duck hair shaper w extra blades - eBay (item 130315409852 end time Jul-04-09 14:58:32 PDT)
Figured at under $10 its at least worth adding to my collection, especially as I love dubl duck. Dunno why. Just appeals to me.
My question is, how well do you think it will serve as a shavette for stuff like travelling, camping, when I have no shave ready razors, etc? It is a hairshaper, but will it be serviceable or am I better of leaving this on the shelf? I feel like because these are the disposable razor type blades it is probably serviceable. Any info/advice would be great.

    Default It will work

    Khaos,

I started with a Diane 21 hair shaper and it took a disposable Super Stainless Steel blade (made in Japan & a Feather knockoff)

The blade is very sharp on your first shave so use a light touch and pay attention. The blade will last about 5-6 shaves before you feel its working too hard to shave. The square point can easily scratch you when doing the side cheeks, so use this trick to keep the front square point off your skin when you are not using that part to shave - blow your check out a little to keep the front tip off the skin when using the mid and rear point of the blade.

I did upgrade my straight razors, but I still like the challenge of shaving with this cheap disposable straight blade. Sometimes it is great to blow off the light honing and stropping and just shave. I am fond of this because this is the tool I started out with to learn straight shaving and it provided no forgiveness. It also played a critical role in educating me on how sharp the fixed straights needed to be to be effective.

The standard was a to make the fixed straights to be as sharp as a disposable straight on its third shave with me. Therefore, I never spun my wheels guessing if my fixed straight was sharp enough???

I have no regrets using this to get started and it represents one of the cheapest ways to get started with a straight razor.

Thanks for the help. I already do the cheek puffing thing to deal with my spike points lol! Yeah, I got this sucker for camping and stuff. maybe for when my friends want to start and wanna borrow something, I could lend them this and sell them a blade or two.

In looking at your photo closely, it appears the be exactly the same as mine, less the nicer doubleduck scale. Yes, good for traveling and misc. applications that always seem to come up.

Its also nice to lend it to someone if they want to try straight shaving. Just switch out the blade and here you go......
