Default This could be bad in a good way!

Well, I am doing what I promised (sort of) myself and my wife I would not do…join another forum and become immersed into another hobby. But this is something that I do every day… shave! So that is a good enough reason for me. My wife on the other hand may take some more convincing.

I have bought my third razor in as many days. Along with my Genco Heavy and a nice Engels, I picked up an H. M. Christensen for $10.00 from Nelly’s Necessities. I got the Engels from Helen at Nelly’s as well. The HMC is very clean with no rust and nice original handle scales. The edge looks very good and should prove to be a good user. Do any of you have experience with the Christensen razors and how do they perform?

I will send all into a good honemeister as soon as I can find one. Do they ever offer package deals or does it work that way? Sorry for my ignorance fellas… this is new to me.

I need a strop but I think I need to post questions in another area of this forum for that.

The Christianson if in good shape, will be a great shaver.... At least everyone I have honed is...

You have 3 rather well thought of brands of razors, you should do just fine...

Great !!! screen name BTW good to see another shooter here...

    Glen,
I had a chance to look at your website and it is impressive. Your skills in this relatively new arena for me look extensive. As soon as my purse grows some (things have been a little slow here in Montana) I will ship these razors to you for honing. I wasn't planning on any of this, it just kinda happened. I was nosing around in a local second hand store and bought the Genco Heavy for $5.00. But I am really enjoying this.

You are right about the shooting. My experience goes way back in my youth with my Dad's 30-30 Marlin and 264 Winchester Magnum. I shot a three shot group with that old Remington 700 (great trigger) that you could cover with a dime! I now own a stock Winchester Model 70 300 WSM that prints into a half inch (3 shots) at 100 yards. I think it was the bore lapping. Don't get me started!

I need to install some new scales on the Genco. The originals are serviceable but damaged but I would like to replace them eventually. I have two slabs of stabilized crotch walnut that may make a nice set. I was going to use them for knife scales but they would look great on the straight razor. Thanks for your reply and I will email you before I ship these.
    Best regards,
    Denny

We're fortunate to have a group of several people around here who are doing work of the caliber Glen has demonstrated, which is really saying something these days. (I am NOT one of those people, just for the record)

I have to agree that you've gotten yourself 3 very serviceable razor brands. I'd love to see some pics of what you have. If you're going to send a razor out to one of the pros around here, you want to be sure you're sending razors that really deserve the attention. Besides, everybody loves photos of nice razors around here.

Sounds like you will be starting out right!

Seems like most guys start with the "bought a Zeepk before I found this forum" story, and that's a real bummer.

    Glen,
I am just outside of Billings over looking the Yellowstone River. I have eagles, turkeys, geese, ducks and whitetails so close I can hit them with a rock! I have been all over Sandpoint when I worked for the railroad. My kind of place... I love all the pickups with the rifle racks in the rear windows!

The Federal .338 loading is a great round. I had a Ruger .338 mag with synthetic stock (old style). It hurt me more shooting it than what I was shooting at! Pull the trigger and ! With a nice stock on it, no worries.

Glen, one question on the handle scales. Have you ever used stabilized wood to make them? I need to do something with the Genco Heavy as the blade is now protruding through the bottom of the stock handle. This is not a safe situation. Good luck on your rifle... should be a shooter (what kind of barrel?)
    Best regards,
    Denny

sorry, you guys got on something I find interesting so I'm hijacking. I have heard really good things about the Montana action. they got some flak for bringing their Professional model out later than expected, but that is rolling now as well. Do tell us more about your project Glen.

you going to go ahead and use a standard length action so you can seat the bullets out further?

I would like to get a 338 win mag at some point, not for need just because it's a round I've always liked the feedback on. I got rid of my 7mm rem mag and am going to sell my 264 in the next month (gotta get a couple things done on it first). I have a great Argentine that is already opened up for magnum, has 2pos Burgess side swing safety, timney trigger and has beens surface ground, just needs heat treat and polishing. I think that's what I'll end up using down the road.

Sorry boys, I have been buried at work this week at the shop...finally! I didn't know if anyone was going to service a pump again!

Just a few answers to your comments. The choice of the razors I have were totally luck! I bought the Genco on a fluke. The Engels was more reaction than plan but the Christensen was purposeful after reading some comments on this forum. I will post some photos as soon I can get time. I have relatives from out of state here and well you know how that goes.

Red, I wanted to mention that the action you picked for your rifle is nice. I had a 6mm Remington built on a small ring Mauser that was to drool over. Like an idiot I sold it! If you have a 1909 Argentine it is one of the best that MauserWerk made. Be careful of the M91-93 version as they were built for lighter pressure and must be reworked to use with modern high pressure rounds as it sounds like you already know. You're smart to have it heat treated and that is good. Sounds like a nice setup. I used to hunt pheasants in the cotton fields outside of Fresno in the late 70's. Lots of good memories there. I know the boys running this forum want us to stick to razors and such but I always thought that shooting and shaving went hand in hand (but maybe not at the same time)!

I just picked up a used but in good condition Medal of Award horsehide/linen strop so I am on my way. Would like to get some hones but out of the budget. I will send the Genco Heavy and Christensen to Glen for "shave ready" honing soon. I need to work on the Engels for appearance. Thanks for your comments and interest.
    Best regards,
    Denny
