    Default Wapi Scales

I have a new Wapi that shaves pretty nicely however the balance is way out of wack due to the steel scales. Does anyone sell scales I can use to replace the stock scales or do I need to send it to a custom maker and have it done special? Thanks.

FloppyShoes just posted that he's done the scales and honing for a lot of Wapi's (I think in a thread in the vendor's corner, and maybe the workshop or the gallery too). I think he'd be a great resource for info on Wapi scales.

i think the wedge in particular is heavy, but i always wondered about drilling holes in the scales to lower weight..
the heavy wedge piece is far out in the balance of things still.

I don't think it's the wedge so much as the scales themselves. Lots of older blades, especially out of Sheffield, have lead or pewter wedges, and those materials are (I'm pretty sure) more dense than stainless steel (Wapi wedge), and thus heavier.

I would encourage you to give it a go for yourself.

Making scales can be done effectively with nothing but hand tools if you have enough patience, and nothing but a dremel with a little les patience.

You won't get results that look like the magic produce by glen, dan, seraphim, etc, but these were done with nothing more than a dremel, sandpaper and hand tools.

Very nice. Maybe I will try my hand at making some scales. With the steel scales I give the Wapi a 5 on a scale of 1-10. I figure with new scales it would jump to 9 or 10. It seems too hard to control as it is now, just doesn't feel right.
