Default Latest find: old bone scale razor

    Hi there,
Just bought this very old looking razor at a 2nd hand store.
It has some almost worn down bone scales. The blade ground is somewhere between a 1/4 hollow and a wedge.
The tang is pretty short. And there is some text saying: Chevallier A Glamacy. (or something like that)

let me know what you think

I'd say it comes from France. Any marks?
EDIT: oh, now that you added the marks, my hypothesis seems right!
EDIT2: I forgot to say that features commons between old Sheffield blades (straight scales and short tail) were in vogue in France much later (end of XIX c. and first quarter of XX c.).

Now for the million dollar question, what should I do with it? Could rescale it and clean up the blade...

Why rescale? Take 5 hours and clean it with some MAAS (or equivalent).

because I don't like the almost worn down crappy looking straight scales... Rather have some smooth wooden scales ^^

    Nice Score

It looks almost exactly like my Wade, Wingfield & Rowbothom, which was made somewhere around 1850. I'm with clavichord on this one - if the pins are solid I wouldn't rescale it. I think that once it's cleaned up it will be too handsome to alter from its original configuration.

    Best Regards

Nice score! I'm with those above. If you are willing to put some time into making nice wooded scales you can put the same time into cleaning and polishing the original bone scales. Try some Neets Foot oil or the like on it and buff away!

    Enjoy your find!

It's not visible in the pictures, but the scales aren't that good anymore, there are some holes and cracks in it. Besides this, the razor does not close properly and I can hardly open it to shaving position.

Maybe I can fill up the holes and cracks with epoxy and re-pin it with a proper wedge in stead of the very small spacer it has now.

I would regret tossing the bone scales...

At the end of the day, it's up to you what you do to it, but i do agree with the other fellas. I'd leave it in those if they're ok. They're part of it's history.
Are they really bone, that's stained, or are they horn? Horn's a bit more likely & with a bit of work, can look awesome. You can make it truly gleam!

Big +1 for me but if you prefer to rescale in wood that is cool too. Looks like you will have a fine shaver there.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
