English steel, sorry other than that - a picture will definitely help us determine if it's worth cleaning up.

Thanked: 3164John Heiffor was officially appointed to make razors for the army. In 1852 he was in Belfield Street, then Paradise Square. He was still recorded as a razor manufacturer in 1911. He also made razors for other people, of course, and microtome blades. A cutlery marks book has him dated between 1861 and 1919, and confusingly says that he was also known as John Hill.
Regards,
Neil

If it helps, I think I've read that Sheffield blades made after 1890 have "England" stamped on them.
Edit: looks like "The Prince's Own" was engraved with a crown on other razors as well, such as Oak Works, Frederick Reynolds, and George Wostenholm.
Guess that prince liked his razors.Last edited by northpaw; 08-27-2009 at 05:03 PM.

Thanked: 1587Dating Sheffields is a process fraught with perils. After years of experience, here are a few tips I have picked up.
1. Always open the door and pull out the chair for Sheffields. They are old-school and like a bit of old-fashioned good-manners.
2. Take them to a classy restaurant. Do not take your Sheffield to a MacDonalds, at least not on the first date.
3. Sheffields like compliments. Take notice of its scales, compliment it on the smoothness of its edge and the curve of its barber's notch. If it is a wedge, say something nice about its heft; if hollow, murmur sweet nothings about the precision of its grind.
4. End the evening with a polite, yet warm, handshake or perhaps a small hug and kiss on the spine - never on the shank!. Sheffields are old-fashioned in that way. If you are expecting a one night stand, you are dating the wrong type of razor. Try a Solingen if that is your intention.

Some info about John Heiffor, who made good razors, as all manufacturers in Sheffield.
