Thanked: 116If I recall correctly, from my metal banging days, Silver Steel is actually closer to W-1 carbon steel than to stainless. I would need to find my old spec sheets and compare the compositions again.

Thanked: 346Silver steel is not stainless. It doesn't even contain silver. It is a high carbon steel that polishes to a silver-like gleam, which is I suspect how it got its name.

In his "Collecting Straight Razors" Robert Doyle mentions that Michael Faraday was responsible for the early work on silver steel. Here is a bit on that from a title in Google Books. I've noticed a lot of the razor mfgs used the term on their blades as a marketing tool. Most recently TI before they changed over to their new alloy.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

Thanked: 995A bit closer to O-1 than W-1 based on the chromium content. It's a lovely material for sharp edges for sure.
