Thanked: 4Barbers notch Why?
I've been searching for an answer to this and haven't been able to find one. What is a barbers notch for? Does it even serve any prupose, or is it just decoration?

It is to open the razor easier.
I read it somewhere on here but can't remember where.

Thanked: 335The barber's notch
The best explanation I've read is that the notch on the end of the blade was perfectly placed for the barber who was holding the razor in one hand, the other being busy doing other barber type stuff, now could open it by catching the notch on the breast pocket of his smock. Now open, the razor could be stropped and the shave could begin.
Or it could be there just for something different to look at.Last edited by Bruce; 10-05-2009 at 04:11 PM.

Thanked: 3164I don't subscribe to the theory that it was for opening the razor one-handed. Why couldn't the tail be used, if you absolutely had to hold something so resolutely with the other hand that you could't even bring yourself to put it down to open the razor?
I think that a more likely explanation is that it helped shave up close to and around things like ears, nostrils, etc.
