I find that kind of funny because I think the 208 is neat looking in that retro-wannabe-tacky sort of way. I've considered the exact same thing. However, I'm trying not to feed the RAD too much or I'd try to get them all... like Pokemon or something.

The only thing holding me back now is the thought that I could pay 20-30 for a vintage blade and get the DA another time when I've got more cash lying around... It may stil hold me back, but my resolve is weakening :rofl2:.
So can any of you guys comment on edge maintenance on the DA's that are a bit warped and/or the ones that are smilers?
I've got no problem with the idea of doing a rolling X when honing the razor for the first time, but if these puppies are fussy durng each touch up, that could get old.
I have never come across a GD/DA that had any warpage to the cutting portion of the blade. All if the issues with misalignment have to do with the tail and tang in relation to the body of the blade. That is only an issue if you are going to re-scale them.Quote:

It's hard to tell in the video, but the Gold Dollar 66 was cutting the HHT fairly well. I knew it would shave based on my experience with that test and my hair.
Best of all is when the hair just falls away rather than pops. The Gold Dollar was almost there but just short. So the shave was very good but not perfect.

Well I just pulled the trigger on a Gold Dollar 208 AND a 108. I couldn't make up my mind which one I wanted, so I got both :).

Not yet. I picked up the whole line (one of each) from Mr.Park but haven't had a chance to use any yet. Soon maybe. Please let us know whoever has a chance to test drive one.
Mine is still in transit. Ordered on the 2nd. The waiting is killing me.
I took delivery of three from jreiter22. Man did they ship fast! I think he shipped them to me before I ordered them!
Hope to have at least one honed by Sunday night to try on Monday.

I have a 66, a 100, and a 208. I have honed all three and shaved with the 66 and the 208. I thought they honed up easily to a nice shaving edge. All three now pass HHT and treetop arm hair. The shaves were nice. It will take a while for me to decide how they compete with my other razors. For now I would say they're at least average, which is not bad considering the price. I look forward to other reports.
Father-in-law goes to China all the time. Fetched me what appears to me to be much the same as '208' ~3 months ago, but you can't really tell because there's so much stuff over there that looks exactly the same. He goes to a wholesale 'city' where a building the girth of an airplane hangar and nearly a half mile long has booth after booth of manufacturer and their wares, which they'll customize to you. Says it would take a couple of weeks just to survey the whole thing.
Frankly, I'd be scared if I were Dovo and the like, because these are very close and absurdly cheaper. They're nothing like the stuff from Pakistan. Out of the box it did need significant honing, but I can almost say the same about Dovo and TI, and after getting it up to par I can't really say that the shave's much different than the entry-level Dovo I have.
Not quite on the level of the extra-hollow-ground Dovo, but at least a quality average shave and average edge retention. I've had vintage Solingen-made razors which were much worse at keeping their edge.
I did a basic honing, according to the pyramid 15 and down on my norton 4000/8000, stropped it and it passed the hanging hair...sort of, and however, shaved fairly well. I'm still a newb however..
i bought a 100 from mr. parko on ebay and it took 3 weeks to get here. i have started to hone it. the edge was a wreck:rant:, looking at it under a 30x jewelers loop, it had several nicks and in general not good at all:(. it is starting to hone up fairly fast. will have to wait and see how it shaves when i am done. all in all it looks like it will be ok. especially for the price $15 including s/h...
Just ordered one of the208's from jreiter22 he honed it and got it shave ready for me and shipped it on Monday, should be here soon. I'll let you know as soon as I try it out. Will be my first str8 shave though so I dont know how much my input will be worth.
I received a 108 and a 208 from Jay Reiter in the mail yesterday. I honed them both last night. They both honed very easily. I shaved with the 208 this morning and the shave was excellent.

Mine came in the mail yesterday about a week after I ordered it. Shipping seems to be very good but the blade itself has significant issues. It is no where near shave ready (for $10-$15 I don't expext it to be). It has some pretty severe scoliosis. It also has one of those rainbow colored discoloration spots about the size of a BB that makes me question the steel quality.
I will contact the seller and try to get a replacement. I will post the results of my interaction with the seller and let everybody know how the customer service is.

i finished honing the gold dollar and tried the first shave tonight. i was to say at the least very surprised at the shave. it was smooth and overall very, very good, considering the thing only cost $15 including s/h from ebay.
when the razor was received it was not in very good shape(please look at my previous post) the blade honed up very easy and hopefully will hold the nice edge. i would tell anyone that for the money it is a very good straight.
I just shaved with my Gold Monkey 777 (from the parko) and it was awesome. Set the bevel on 1k, worked a pyramid on a 4k/8k, then on to the barber hone and then the CrOx. I had 2 days of growth and it just fell away. 1st pass WTG and 2nd pass ATG. I am very impressed with the monkey, now its time to get a couple of Gold Dollars.
just curious what sort of grit rating you start on to get these shave ready? 4k?
well i finally pulled the trigger on a gold dollar #66 razor. il be saying my prayers every night hoping to not receive a really bad razor!
i have heard talk of people grinding these down to a spike point. how much would this cost? who is doing it? just curious.....
My gold monkey finally came in from mr.parko and it actually seems to be in good condition, the scales are tight and the razor closes very straight. The metal looks pretty clean an straight as well. If I could hone I'd be shaving with it already. Can't wait to throw some new scales on there and see what I can do with it.

My two 208 both came with misaligned scales as well. Out of curiosity, I hit one of them with my father's vintage Daybrook hone, 20 laps on Ray-Man Hard Balsa Crox Strop (no, I'm not a paid endorser) 20 on canvas and 20 on leather to see what happens. The result: a three pass BBS shave. The scales do suck so I will be rescaling one of them, the other I'm gifting to a friend.
I was modding a razor (what a surprise!), and lopped off the tip.
It was a quite clean cut, and gave a nice view of the grind on these razors. You can see the even grind, and the "belly" from the full hollow.
Just thought it was kind of neat.

I just got a gold monkey last night and although my eye is not as trained as yours, it did appear to be a pretty even grind on the razor.

If you you could take a look at that wiki yourself in case something was missed, that would be great.
In the few blades I have restored I've had to use almost all of these methods for different blade alignment issues. (had to use a couple of em just for the JR torry I did, that one was an alignment nightmare).
