Thanked: 116I think I just won an interesting lot
I just won a small lot on eBay (me? suffering from RAD? never!) and there is a funny one in there...
As you can see, the middle one has a Grelot logo
According to the description, it has the "Medaillé d'or Paris 1931" (which could match Grelot) and "super service" etchings on the blade.
The other side of the same tangs
Now if I understood correctly, Grelots were not originally manufactured by Thiers but they acquired the stock from a competitor. I did a bit of searching on Lavaley but came up empty-handed. I did however find that Thiers was already selling Grelot blades with the "Médaillé d'or Paris 1931" under their own line, so now I am confused... what did I buy?

If I'm not mistaken the 'bell' on the reverse tang is/was the logo of the Le Grelot .
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I'd say the top one in the first picture is far more interesting with a worked back like that!
Be sure to post some pics of it when you receive the lot.

Thanked: 116Yes the top one is also interesting but might be hard to identify due to the lack of marking. The "nice stone" coming with the lot might also be interesting
The grelot will probably stay a sort of mystery like one of my other finds sporting "Biedermeier Nachschliff" on the blade and "224 Weltmeister" on the mark.

It may be hard or impossible to identify like many unbranded blades that simply say 'Solingen.'
But Solingen alone is enough to know thats gona be a sweet shaver.
I wana see more pics of it!

Thanked: 116So the worked back actually is a 6/8 etched blade that reads "Solinger Magnetstahl" with a rooster (I think) in a circle between the two words. It has a very bad case of pitting tho... with a couple of pinholes going through near the nose and several chips in the blade's edge in the same area.
The Ski is a 5/8 "Solinger Magnetstahl" with a shield containing an anvil in a circle between the two words. The blade is less damaged but I'll need to fix the scales or rescale it.
The grelot is a 7/8, I'm still cleaning the blade that has no chips and only some pitting along the spine.

Going back to the original question, that is definitely an 'original' le Grelot - I had the same thing in a while ago. The name on the front side is probably the retailer - le Grelot made razors and stamped them for customers as did most of the large makers. Well done - if it's anything like the one I honed up it'll take a great edge!
