I have a 3 and 5-year old in my home, and your story made me cringe. We just had our first cut on Friday. My daughter--the 5-year old--took a butter knife and sat on the kitchen floor and tried to cut a pear in half. We had no idea she was doing this. Well, she cut her left index finger and it bled like a stuck pig. I cannot imagine how your wife reacted with your son and razor in his hand. Man! Like I said, it made me cringe.

My kids have been pulling chairs and stacking things for a couple of years, so I hear you; a parent has to lock things away, because if the kids want a certain item, then they will get it sooner or later.

I am glad to hear your son was fine.

Good to hear your son is doing fine. It must have been a scary situation at the time.

Thank you, I don't have any children yet, but will definitely keep a locking mechanism in mind when I go to build my razor case.

I have a 4 year old Grandson who is into everything under the sun. He loves everything that Grampa does. We do everything together and when I mean everything I mean everything. One thing he love to do is watch Grampa shave. He helps me with the water and soaking my brush. When shaving time comes he makes sure that he gets his share of the lather too LOL. I have an old Supermatic DE that he plays with but when Grampa went to straights he doesn't want any part of his DE. So being concerned that the potential of him getting into one of my blades started my wheels in motion. He has worked in the shop with me as I do my restoration to the point that he even has his own sander hammer vice grips and C-clamps. I decided that in order for him to understand what a straight razor is about rather than the razor is something bad and will hurt you. I had him help me make his own razor. He selected the wood to use for the blade and the wood for the scales and we built a straight for him. It is made from cherry and lyptus with a white acrylic wedge.
I cut out the pieces and he did the sanding as much as he wanted and I finished it up after he went to bed.
So I figured I would post the razor in this thread and if anyone else wishes to have one made, please PM me and we can discuss. I thought it would make a great little stocking stuffer along with a mug and a bar of shaving soap. The little tykes grow up so dang fast and you sure can miss a ton of fun with them in a short amount of time. I have made 2 more for my other Grandsons and they will all have their initial on them so that they have something they can remember their Grampa when they get older. I have lots of things that I have made for them that are put away as heirlooms.
So anyways PM me if you would like to have some made. I think they will be lots of fun.

I'm very glad to hear your son is fine.

This type of thing has been a dilemma for me. I have 3 and 2 year old sons. They have seen me lather my face. They have never seen me shave, nor have they seen what a straight razor looks like. I keep all of my razors up on a shelf in a wooden box in a room other than my bathroom and lock the door when I shave. They are both at the age and the type of personalities where if you tell them NOT to do something or NOT to touch something........most often they will.

I have no definite plan as to when I will teach them about what a straight razor is, or how they are off limits to them. For me, it just feels much too soon.

    BTW........nice razor, Bill!
