It looks like vulcanite rubber that has oxidized but I didn't know vulcanite was used for scales. Vulcanite is also used for pipe mouthpieces and if left in the sun it will color just like those scales. If these are indeed vulcanite than the oxidation will buff out and they will become nice and black again. However, you will need to be careful around the tree insignia or it will buff away.

If it's hard rubber on the scales, you can re-dye it using this

    HTML Code:

I've used it on black rubber fountain pens from the turn of the century and it worked fine. It doesn't get all over your hands like a normal dye would when it gets wet.

I was thinking the same thing. I have a Peterson pipe that has the same problem.

I guess you could polish it out, but it'll take a lot of elbow grease!

I say leave it. Looks kinda neat that way

...or leave the other side in the sun so it turns the same color. May take awhile though. Also, (and I've had some success with this on fountain pens) bleach can restore the color to black. I'd proceed with great caution though on that one.

Question: What is the color on the inside of that scale? If it's not black, then you may have two different colored scales.

    It's about 11 meters/second (or about 24-25mph)
