Thread: Rust Prevention - Carbon Steel Blades?

How do you treat a carbon-steel blade after shaving to keep it from rusting? Do you just wipe it off? Wipe it with oil? Smear it with a layer of oil?

If you use oil, what kind? Do you wipe it off before shaving again the next time? Do you scrub the blade before stropping or honing it, to avoid gunking up the strop or hone?

Personally, I just wipe mine off with toilet paper and store them in a cabinet (not in the bathroom). You can oil them if humidity is a concern - the thicker the oil the better it coats the blade (so long as you can get it off when you want). Tuffglide also seems to be used a fair bit around here.

I live in an old Victorian house with no central heating, about 50 yards from the sea. These products have kept my carbon blades in absolutely spotless condition

One of the best things about TufGlide/TufCloth is that they use a dry film lubricant/preservative, so there is no messy oil to wipe off.

The thin film on the blade has had no negative effect on my strops (in 10 months of daily usage). It has also not had any negative effect on the razor scales (bone, wood, plastic & celluloid).

To bad there isn't as much availability of Stainless Steel based blades as there is in Japanese kitchen cutlery.

What are some of the better Stainless Steel based models, that are available new for purchase?

I rinse my blade off with hot tap water , wipe it dry with cotton balls , and leave the blade open to dry overnight . I don't use oil , because I've not found it necessary . I currently have 16 razors in my rotation , and none of them are stainless steel . This method has worked for me for more than 2 years , so far . I'm also careful not to get the tang and pivot area wet when I'm shaving , because that is where water can get trapped , and cause problems .

I just strop the razor 3-5 times on each side on my pants leg and call it a day. (pull the pants leg tight and be careful)
