A Wedge??
I recently bought an unsual razor. It is, I think what is called a wedge. It is the first one I have seen. I have heard of them but have not seen one until today. The sides are completely flat. There is no curvature at all. No hollow grind at all. It is a seven eithts The only markings on it is R. Hibberd Sheffield. Anyone have any idea how old it might be or if it is worth anything. It is quite rusty but it is not deep rust. There is no handle at all. Thanks for any help. I will post a pic of it later. Mack

True wedges are quite rare; I've never actually seen one. What is more common is that the grind is so slightly hollow that you don't really notice it. As far as value - we don't do that on here; it's worth whatever someone will pay for it. I don't think I've ever heard of Hibberd from Sheffield, so no idea how old she might be.

Hey Mack,
Give Steve (blueprinciple) a holler Here in the UK, he might be able to help you. I contacted him a while back about some razors I had. Even though what I had weren't listed in any of his sources he could give me an estimated manufacture date (which is what I wanted to know) from pics I sent him. You may have something "extremely scarce" as he put it about the ones I have.

Thanked: 13245It is listed In the Standard Guide but no dates are given...
R Hibbard - England
3 other Hibbards are listed too
Most likely a late mid to late 1800 Sheffield co.
A pic would help date it too...

I have one as well, 7/8 JR. It's not 'ruler' flat, but the hollow is nearly imperceptable. Still haven't gotten to polish and hone it, even though it's in my todo pile for 2 years now.

I laid it on my saw table and put a flashlight on it and it looks flat, as near as I can tell. If there is any concave to it I can't detect it. Maybe after I clean the rust off. The edge is very dull and it will need a lot of work. I am excited. I want to shave with it at least once. It is pretty heavy though so it will not have much balance. This business of razor collecting, restoring, and using is one of the most fun things I have ever got into.
