Thanked: 0Hess 44?
I was looking through antique stores today searching for something to restore. Unfortunately the only place that had any razors in decent shape that I found were pretty much already restored. I saw a Hess 44 in very good condition. How much would you guys pay for one? I just want to make sure I get a good deal before I buy it. Also, would this be good to start on? I have used DE but never a straight razor. Thanks.

I'll pay you $5 for it.
As Gugi said, Hess razors are very nice and also great shavers. You should buy it if you can. Something else Gugi has said is that you'll forget the price soon enough and only remember how much you enjoy the razor (he said it in different words, though).

If you haven't seen THIS THREAD which is timely to your post here and is in part, coincidentally about a sweet ol' Hess 44 (of course now I want a Hess 42 after one was posted in that thread), then I suggest you read it. You may gain some insight that will help you with your decision to buy the razor in question.
My take, as you can see after reading that thread is that I would say the Hess 44 at whatever antique store you're able to buy it from would be a deal at virtually any cost.

In those two threads, the 44 and the 42 I wouldn't be surprised if they went for $50. I wouldn't be surprised if they went for $100 if a bid war started, but I'd say $30 to $50 is what I've seen them go for on the bay. The reason it probably looks good/very restorable is it is stainless. Other factors though include edge condition, hone wear, scale warp (Hess's are made from some kind of material that the ducks are too and they both warp notoriously). If you could post a pic people would be more than helpful I'm sure.
