Thread: 3 found razors, looking for info about

I found these 3 razors in my grandfathers attic after his passing. Anybody have any info, value, worth honing advice about them. thanks.

1. "The Genco Co. Bradford Pa" on the shank. And "Fluid Steel" on the scale.

2. "Shumate" on the shank

3. "Morton Hardware Co" on the Shank. And "J.B.M" on the blade.

As a side note...Great web site. Finding these blades in my grandfathers attic and this web site has peaked my interest. I have ordered a new Dovo Bismark from Straight Razor Design and am looking forward to its arival. I can see these razors becoming like my fountain pens, one will never be enough!!!

actually #2 has "shumate" on the blade in a seal that is hard to read

Welcome to SRP. We don't do appraisals but in terms of 'worth honing' they look like they would be well worth it as shavers. Genco and Shumate made good razors and although I'm not familiar with the other brand it is probably a good one too. Most of the old stuff was. The SRP Wiki here will give you the resources you need to get started and check out the razor database. Watch our for the RAD (razor acquisition disorder) You sound like a prime candidate.

I understand....when I said "worth" I was not looking for a dollar amount, but a crap vs worth messing with.

The first razor was manufactured by Genco Co in Bradford PA between 1916-1965.
The second razor was manufactured by Shumate Cuttlery of St. Louis Mo. between 1904-1932
The last is a bit more difficult. IMO it was manufactured by J. Morton of Oxford England. I cannot give you dates.

I found this old thread while researching my newly acquired J.B.M. razor. This is the only reference I have found to the brand.

Can anyone provide any more info on "J.B.M." and/or "J. Morton of Oxford, England"?

Martin, manah or Neil are your best bet for any detailed info. Maybe a PM with a link to your post ........

We are partial to Genco razors here in eastern PA. Bradford is just up the road a piece from me. I have a small collection of Gencos and I count a "Fluid Steel" among them....... Very good shaver when properly honed. Enjoy.

Well there really no need to look up info on J. Morton of Oxford because i can tell you by looking at that J.B.M. razor that it was made in Germany, probably around 1910-1920.
