I've always wanted to try one, but I'm not at all ashamed to say that when Lynn offered me a choice of two of his (Livi and... I don't remember who made the other one), I opted not to give them a test run.

You're missing out Dylan. With regards to OP's statement, if I were to count how many times I've nicked myself to date, I would say I've nicked more with western straight compared to Japanese straight. As proficient I am now with both styles, the learning curve with the Japanese was easier for me ( not to say it was overly difficult with western ). Perhaps it varies for others. Having shaved with Iwasaki, Livi, Norikazu's Kanetake and Tsugeru's Kanetaka, I feel that these by far supercede the rest in my arsenal. Granted that may seem hard to believe considering I've only few Western straights from Boker, Clauss, Dovo, Gold Dollar, H. Keschner, Larkin, Dubl Duck, Lion Razor Works, Torrey and miscellaneous Solingen set ( which dwarfed by many SR shavers here without question ). Take this with talc of Clubman.

I'm actually reluctant acquiring more Westerns considering the absolute close shave one can achieve with the Japanese. Hey at least it means more razors for you and less competition mate

Even my largest Size 2 is not at all bad compared to Japanese Western Style 6/8 which is a bit tricky. I reckon its grind need getting used to as I don't have many framebacks ( I believe that is what it's called ).

Maybe if you start you straight experience with one it's much easier. Personally, I've found if you start with a western type and later use a Japanese and shave with one side only it is much more difficult to master only because of the need to invent new handholds to get to all areas of your face. I agree you will get a better shave with one over a western type. Of course like anything else once you master it it's no big deal to use.
