Thread: Clauss USMC Razors

I have a question? I've been watching and looking on the bay for the USMC Clauss and the last few have been the older version with U.S.M.C. etched on the blade and a round point there is one just listed that has or looks to have a spike or square point and being of the older version. My question is being I've never seen one other than on the bay is the USMC on the blade stamped or etched with acid or some other way and how easy would it be for somebody to fake and how could you tell?

I know someone on the forum (I think oldblades) can do laser etchings on blades, because another member (I think Ookala) has a custom etched Wapi blade. I don't know how close it would look to the etch you want, though.

I've owned several of both types over the years and both of the ones on the bay look original to me.

The one on eBay that sold this evening is the OLDER Clauss USMC model -- the one created for the Spanish American War, and not the WWI model. I am not the seller, but I have owned another Clauss USMC Spanish American War model, and the razor on eBay looked completely authentic to me, even down to the slightly imperfect etching on the blade, which mine also had.

Actually, it's kind of surprising how nicely some of these razors have survived. Mine was in mint, never-honed condition, and the one on eBay looks nearly the same. My theory is that they handed these blades out to every single grunt, whether he wanted one or not, and maybe some guys used them, but many just stuck them in their bags and saved them for their grandkids. That would seem to be why you see them turn up brand new in estate sales from time to time.
