Thread: Dovo Special or Ebony ?

For those of you who are familiar with the Dovo Special / Turtoise, and the Dovo Ebony / Silver steel - which one do you like better ?

Does the Tortoise still look like cheap plastic ? Is the blade polish noticeably shinier than the Dovo Best Value ?

Did the goldwash on the Silversteel's spine look gaudy ? Does it hold up to stropping & honing ? Do the scales look more expensive than the Tortoise, or like cheap died wood ?

Is there any difference in how often I'd need to hone the Silver Steel versus the regular steel in the Special ?

The dovo special is a good razor. If this is your first razor the plastic scales may be a better way to go just from a maintenance point of view. The scales look good and not cheap. Lots of people get that special as a first razor and love it. I have a several vintage razors and am still thinking about buying the special just because I like it. As far as wear on the razor it will be just fine if you take care of it will not wear any different than any other razor.

Count me among them. As a newbie, for me, how the razor looked was the major selling point. I wasn't going to have the luxury of trying several out to see how they felt or shaved. The Dovo special looks good, shaves well, and I intend to keep it and use it.

If you can afford to do so, I think you should get any razor with a good rep that you really like the looks of. I have a few like that, and they always make me smile when it's their turn to cleave my whiskers.

I've had a new Ebony for about 2 months and the Ebenholz on the scale is fading already. There's also a light scratch along the tang when I got it. Gold wash is holding up so far.

I've got a Dovo Special and it's a great razor!....heck, I even shaved with it today. Dovo really gives you alot of bang-for-buck on the Special and IMHO, it's just as pretty as the more expensive Bismarck (which I also have). From a maintenance point of view, I have to agree with the others in that you don't have to worry about messing up your pretty scales with soap or water through your shave or cleanup.

Is the silver steel any better than the regular Dovo steel ? (Strop sharper, need honing less often, feel smoother, etc ?

Also, will the Ebony scales warp less than the plastic ones ? Will they protect the blade any better when traveling ?

Does the 5/8 measurement for the Special & Ebony include the spine ? If not what is the total width of the 5/8 & 6/8 ?

I got my first razor a few days ago, i got the Dovo Silver Steel with Ebony handle. I love it , she is my baby . I love the ebony handle, it feels soo natural and unique lol. But i have a thing for nice wood lol. But as far as i know, you cant go wrong with Dovo

AFAIK, there is no difference in the performance of the steel. The razor should come shave ready and you should strop it as you would any other razor. The feel on your skin will be the same as any other razor.

Neither of the scales should warp and if you take care of the razor the scales will remain true. Make sure you keep the scales and pivot area dry and dry the razor totally before storage. When travelling, put the razor in the box it came in or get a toothbrush holder from the supermarket and put it in that.

The 5/8 measurement includes the spine, which means that the razor measures 5/8" from spine to the edge.

I own both of these razors but prefer the "Special". It is just an incredibly good razor for the money. If I didn't own many other razors, I wouldn't mind shaving with this every day.
