New Ebay Find
Hello everyone from Snowy Dallas Texas...
We got 12 inches overnight and set some records... 175,000 folks out of power... I'm one of the lucky ones with no problems..
Anyway.. I recently found a Wade and Butcher Vintage Straight Razor on Ebay... it wasn't getting the usual bids and I wasn't sure why... I thought maybe it is because the pics were sort of distorted and the razor looked ... extra long... and not necessarily proportional...
I wrote the seller and he said no it was proportional and gave me a better description of the razor... no chips, no cracks, no rust!!.. You couldn't tell from the pics that there was no rust or the wear of the blade.. He assured me after some explanation that the wear was not excessive...
So I bid and won. 20.00 ...
It has arrived and here are some pics of my recent Ebay find.. It appears nearly new, no scratches, no dings or cracks..
My question is about the Gold wash that was present on the blade and tang.. almost all the Gold wash is gone on the Blade, but about 96% remains on the tang.. I'm not sure how to clean this area safely... and whether or not there is something I can do to protect the gold wash that remains.. clear coat of some kind?
Is there a way to have gold wash replaced? Not that I will, but I'm wondering... because you see so many Dovo's with it... can you have it redone if you are willing to pay for it... Is there some way to fake it with "gold metal paint" or something...
Just curious...
And... will a 4/8 blade "extra hollow ground" give a good shave??
by the way it has an extra long monkey tail with "improved" etched on it.
tnx all
Maq

I have heard that those Improved W&B's are supposed to be killer shavers, but have never got to try one myself. Does yours say Aristo on the back of the tang? IIRC, Lynn is a huge fan of those.
Size and hollowness have nothing to do with how well a blade will shave. I think a stiffer grind is easier to learn on because they don't flex, but once you can shave you can shave with anything.
For $20, that thing was a steal. Congrats.

Great buy for twenty bucks. Ought to be a fine shaver. You did make out like a bandit on that one.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.
