Thanked: 1An Urge to Collect?
I bought a Wiederstrahl straight razor off fleaBay just out of a whim. All of a sudden it got a friend to keep it company. Now I regularly check for new listings of straight razors for more. Is this normal? Currently I am perfectly content with double edge razors, but there's just something about 4/8" of gleaming steel.

Dont fight it, just enjoy it! Thats the best advice I can give you as a fellow sufferer! Hehe!
Actually, I dont suffer it, I enjoy every minute!

4/8" is just the beginning. Soon you will need more, a 5/8" then 6/8" then just when you think you have the monkey off your back you'll see an old W&B Chopper and the 500 pound gorilla will come down on you with full force and at that point there is no hope. Full blown RAD has set in and the only cure then is more of the same. You are doomed.

See this thread here for the answer to your question.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

straight razor -zeepk -tomahawk -master -kriegar -sweeney
Sorted by newly listed, so that I can agonize over them for a full 6 days.

Thanked: 1903It makes sense to a certain degree. Finding out which widths, grinds, or point styles suit you best can be a lot of fun.
I also think it is our responsibility to sell those we do not like, as long as they are functional, because there is a limited number of usable razors in the market, and prices have got rather intimidating for beginners already. And eBay is practically dead (there is a much enhanced search string in the Wiki, by the way).
What I do not understand (but I am not really a collector) is why people pay insane prices for certain brand names. The madness du jour being Filarmonicas, but I could imagine large Busch razors becoming the next. It just does not compute. Yes, certain brands are of consistent across the board, but then again, I have yet to see a bad vintage Solingen (and I am not talking about a razor honed to death by some honester). So, well, it is all relative.
Regards,
Robin

Forget about thinning your herd. The more the merrier. Some members have as many as 500 or more. I just pushed up over the 60 mark as a result of an antique shopping spree on Monday.
I don't intend on selling any of mine. They are all keepers and shavers as far as I'm concerned. That goes double for my hones.JERRY
OOOPS! Pass the styptic please.
