Thanked: 11Oiling a Straight Razor
Hey Everyone!
My understanding is that str8's need to be oiled to prevent rust after use as well as when storing them for an extended period of time. How much oil do you put on the razor? Do you put oil all the way down the tang and on the tail? When a razor is oiled, is it ok to close it completely if its oiled and will it damage the scales?
Thanks
Marco

Less is more. A very light coat on all metal surfaces will do the job. For long term storage you might want a little heavier duty product and use a tad more. If you use the proper amount the scales will not be affected.

I just use a little wad of kleenex after I spray some camellia oil on the blade.

Thanked: 267I use this filled with oil. I use Corrosion-X but you can use whatever you want. The bottom unscrews and you add the oil and it is shown with the top off. I like it because it keeps my fingers away from the blade and applies the right amount. I got it Japan Woodworkers but I got it when I was in the store and of course did not have to ship it. Camellia Oil Set w/ 100ml (3.4oz) Camellia Oil & Applicator - The Japan Woodworker Catalog
They also sell just the applicator
Take Care,

I used ballistol gun oil for my gun for 5 years and 1,5 for all my razors. Not a single rust spot! Perfect for wood, horn, leather and any plastic scales can be made from. BTW it is safe for you skin also.

I read several places that rust starts immediately at the micro level, and that even over night not visible to the eye rust can occur. (True? I don't know.) So, I coat my blades between shaves just to be safe.
Besides, I might start using a different razor, and it might be awhile before I use the razor again.

Can you use mineral oil (ie baby oil)? And did someone answer the question about hurting the scales? Is it ok to leave them for weeks or longer with the oil on them?

I use mineral oil at times. More often, I use vaseline. (Some don't approve of vaseline. After reading a lot of these threads, I think it is good.)
I don't oil the scales, and will allow others to respond to that part of your question.
