Str8, feather sharp?
I just shaved for the first time with my new feather no-sharpen razor:
YouTube - Straight razor from Feather
And that was just a great shave! That blade most likely is ninjaassasin sharp!
In honing my razors I have so far gone from a 8K straight to the unpasted strop, and I have gotten nice sharp razors that I could shave with.
But since I know that my razors can be even sharper, I have ordered a paddle and some chromium oxide and some diamond spray.
Now that I am getting into finetuning my blades with paste and spray, I would like to now if it is possible for me to get my straight razors as sharp as the feather blade?
I know that I will just have to try it out, but it would be nice to know what your guys experience is.

answer to your question is small yes and big no. There is some str8 will take similar edge examples are puma gold.wustoff.filly for barber dd wonderedge. Now ther is 95% will not take similar edgor will have the edge but that edgwill not last longer.str8 edge suppose to last at least3 months.does any feather will last so much time? Str8 mean to give smooth shave if you use right tech_ scything motion, feather i dont think you can use scything mothion. now can you get sharpest edge using diamond pest of course you will but edge will be a lot fragile.hope this helps

I can't, thank God. If I tried the process would be so complicated and require so much extra gear and then wouldn't last very long either.
The key to sharpness for me is effective stropping. Without that I'd be lost.

As sharp yes and no.
Factory blades like Feather, Persona, Derby etc. single or DE are
commonly enhanced with a thin layer of teflon that
does change the feel of a shave. In fact a well honed and
stropped str8 can be sharper than a coated blade but not "feel"
as sharp at the time you are shaving. Later in the same day
and tomorrow is a different thing.... YMMV.
Check out US patent 3071856
http://news.google.com/patents/downl...erview_r&cad=0
The patent is interesting both from the perspective of the
date and from the discussion of temperature control needed
to keep the temper intact at the same time fuse/ cure
the teflon. The tight temperature control requirements to
keep the temper may be why some DE blades only give a couple
good shaves while others give many more.... or the brand is
very spotty in terms of quality.
Other tricks are also used but a correctly freshly stropped well honed
str8 is about as sharp as any razor can be. And a str8 can ultimately
be tuned to the preference of the shaver by the shaver.

Having a Feather and other disposable straights as well as fixed straights, I may be able to elaborate on the different angles of sharpening. All disposable straight blades have a big bevel machined into them and they are treated with teflon or something else to make them last longer.
The good times of the disposables starts to fade after the third or forth shave depending on which disposable blade you have and how you shave. Then you are off to a new blade for peak performance.
Honing a bevel like this into a fixed straight would be cumbersome to do and maintain. The beauty of fixed straights is that you constantly tune them to perform as well as a disposable straight blade on its first and/or second shave, so every shave is excellent!
yes, I can sharpen my fixed straight to be sharper than a disposable straight blade and do. The point on my fixed straights is finer, but not as hard as the disposable point.
No knock on the disposables. The shave well and come in handy. But my fixed straights carry the shave load day in and day out.

Str8, Feather Sharp?
My dear Niftyshaving:
Since I keep my Feather and DE razor in rotation with the straights, I am quite familiar with how they shave me in comparison to the straights. Everything you say makes perfect sense to me and I fully agree with you. You're right on the nose.

Obie
