    Thumbs up Carbonsong Honing

    I got myself a carbonsong Thiers 5/8 a few weeks ago .
Thiers recommend their own graded Diamond Pastes in order to get the best out of this new steel .
I have been experimenting with my own hones at the moment & I have found that this steel responds very well to the Spyderco homes I own.
This week I decided to go back a bit away from the spyderco ultrafine hone.
I took the razor to the fine hone to give the edge a bit more bite & I must say that the edge it has given me is a great edge for me.
I have used it for three shaves so far since this & the shaves are great.
So I will continue with this for a while but this experiment may help others who have had issues with the carbonsong blades .
I will keep posting my own findings with this.
    Cheers Paul

In general, I don't buy into what manufacturers say. I think SRPers know best. Go with what works.

Yea, I remember zippo lighters used to come with a paper that said, " To prevent damage to this lighter use only approved Zippo fuel. Ha Ha Ha. Typical. They always say that stuff.

    Paul,
    Thanks for the info.
Just so I understand better, did you try any other hones before deciding the Spyderco's were best?

I tried most of my hones on this one , they are Blue Belgian, Coticule, Chinese, all three Spyderco hones,
I just noticed that off the coticule the edge performed HTT very well ,but if I took it higher & if I put it on the chrome oxide strop that the edge seems to loose some of it's bite.
So I took it back to the medium spyderco & then finished with the fine & I am very pleased with the end result.
This may just be a steel that performs netter without being taken to the extreme limits that we push for here at SRP.
I would have tried the norton combo but I don't own one,but I have been using spydercos for years & they make a great medium/fine double sided pocket hone.
Maybe we have got in the habit of pushing for the ultimate edge all the time when it's not really needed to get a razor to give good shaves.
This is my own findings so far with this steel .
Another member may well have another way to get what works for them .
    Cheers Paul

i had to get to diamond, which i basically never do to get the edge to perform to my likeness (used naniwa before that and quickly tested a couple of naturals as finishers). i sold that razor and the buyer liked it a lot too, so it's two of us.
but, of course everybody has different preferences at different times.

I've never liked the Spyderco hones. I have way better luck with naniwas, shaptons, nortons and naturals. Typical YMMV stuff.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

I got mine from thiers-issard.co.uk, The proprietor Steve Dempster Is a member here Blue principle .
He is great to deal with .
I am so taken with this razor that I sold off my collection & got one of the new Horn handled Silverwings These are the only razors I own now apart from a couple of shavettes.
I also posted a review of this razor in the razor review section.
