Brands of straight razors to avoid

Also some manufacturers have taken to painting "SOLINGEN" on mid-price razors. The blades of these razors are usually forged in Pakistan, and their scales are then put on in Germany so they are using a legal loop hole to claim these are manufactured (or, rather, assembled) in Solingen. These razors tend to cause as many problems as the razors listed above, for apparent reasons. It is common consensus among the SRP regulars that they had also be best avoided.

The key here is it says a new razor. We pretty much know everyone who is making new razor's in Germany these days and that doesn't look like one of them. There have been vintage ones that look similar but unless it indicates it was made in Germany I would shy away from it.

From what I can see the vendor has not sold any other razors, neither have they any other razors for sale, or other items at all for that matter.

In my opinion, FWIW that razor looks like a far eastern fake. I believe this because the gold wash just doesn't have that German look to it, neither does the rest of the razor. I had another look. I can't quite put it into words, but there is alot about it that screams it is not genuinely from Solingen, Germany and that a metal smith somewhere in the far east wishes to capitalise on the Solingen trademark.

Thanks guys, I really hadn't planned on buying one, I mainly wanted to get it brought to the attention of someone in the know so others, especially new guys, would be aware to keep their eyes and minds open to the possibilities of what NOT to buy.

It is not a Far Estern fake or fake of any sort. He is just selling a personal razor he doesn't want or need any more. This came from a batch of stainless blanks ground early last year IN SOLINGEN. Just because it is a generic SOLINGEN does not imply anything about its quality. The generics were usually made for the tourist trade.

The ones I have are imported from Germany. That guy is also selling Geisen & Forsthoff razors and the Solingen one is probably made by them,.

    Default New Razor

I bought a new Solingen straight from The Art Of Shaving. Am I ok? Did I buy a good razor? I seems like a high quality item.

I believe they get those from Dovo and they are fine. I have honed a ton of them and they are good shavers.

    Enjoy,

    Lynn
