Default I picked up a new old razor today.

I stopped into an antique shop today and found this. It still had oil on the blade and is in better condition than my new one, I dont believe its ever been used.
The blade says J.A.Henckels Solingen Zwillingswerk 50 1/2. I picked it up for $40 and plan on shaving with it tonight. Does anyone know its age or background I am new to razors still. The guy at the shop said it was maybe made just after the war. Any info would be appreciated.

Nice find. No idea about vintage. Could be as old as he said or from relatively recent vintage. The box looks really good to have knocked around that long without more shelf wear. One way or the other you scored. If it was me I would have it pro honed if I didn't hone my own.
Be careful how you treat people on your way up, you may meet them again on your way back down.

According to the logo history, this razor was made between 1900 and 1969

Lovely piece. A great score. Can't help you on the vintage, but neither can I see any reason why it shouldn't be what the seller said. Frankly, it looks good at that price even at the latest that, mainaman puts it.

We have some background info on Henckels here: J. A. Henckels - Straight Razor Place Wiki. I would say the logo is post 1969. In any event, consider yourself lucky - great razor at a really great price. What does the number on the tang say? We have quite a few Henckels in the SRDB: http://straightrazorpalace.com/srpwi...henckels&go=Go.

    Regards,

Very nice Henckels, but is it carbon steel or is it stamped "Friodur" stainless? Either would be a great find.
